BREAKING NEWS: Captain Marvel Gets a New Comic Series this January!

Carol Danvers Aka Captain Marvel will soar into the pages of a new ongoing series from writer Kelly Thompson and an all-star creative team debuting in January.

As revealed in the New York Times today, just ahead of her movie debut starring Brie Larson, the powerful superheroine’s new book will be written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Carmen Carnero who has just come off a short but excellent run on X-Men: Red and will see Carol Danvers return to New York after spending time in space.

In the interview with the, NY Times Thompson says that she and Carnero along with colorist Tamra Bonvillain and editors Wil Moss and Sarah Brunstad will be looking to cater to a broad set of different audiences with the book quote:

“You really want her to be accessible to new and younger audiences who are going to see the movie, fall in love and want to seek out other Captain Marvel stories,” Mrs. Thompson said. “But you really want to respect the fans who have loved the character for decades. I think there’s a razor’s edge there.”

This is no small feet as the character of Carol Danvers has a fairly long and complex history which has included previous comics series as well as history with various groups such as the Avengers and X-Men and several incarnations as Ms. Marvel, Binary and Warbird and has seen the character deal with serious issues including alcoholism. It will be interesting to see how Thompson balances these serious topics and character flaws and expectations of older fans while also trying to attract new, younger fans in the wake of the upcoming movie release which is sure to be a blockbuster.

Thompson also said talking to the NY Times quote:

“You really want her to be accessible to new and younger audiences who are going to see the movie, fall in love and want to seek out other Captain Marvel stories,” Mrs. Thompson said. “But you really want to respect the fans who have loved the character for decades. I think there’s a razor’s edge there.”

Thompson further reveals that the series will reconnect Captain Marvel with characters like her friend Spider-Woman and Avengers allies like Iron Man which is no doubt to further cement the relationship of the movie universe to the comics universe for newer fans. Thompson also teased at a possible romance as well with a character she describes as:

“and it may be someone we all know and have seen before in Marvel Comics,”

Thompson further goes on in the article:

“This first arc has some female guest stars in an unexpected way,” Mrs. Thompson said. The first issue also includes some “costume weirdness,” she hinted: “It’s a little bit of a risk, but I think people are going to respond to it.”

Captain Marvel  No.1flies onto shelves January 2019 and will make her big screen debut on March 8, 2019, which happens to be International Woman’s Day (we see what you did there)

The future is female so get ready to soar higher, faster, further, more!

As always we will be watching…
