The Big Day arrives and it all goes off without a hitch. And what wedding would be complete without an appearance from a certain long lost X-Man?
Mark the day in your calendar, the wedding of the decade is here…and it’s NOT who you thought it would be. Gambit steals the show and the hand of his one true love in a surprise move that would shock even chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov.
In a switcheroo worthy of the Cajun Casanova himself, Marvel have pulled a switcheroo that nobody saw coming. Yes, that’s right folks, Kitty and Piotr will NOT be tying the knot in the long-anticipated X-Men Gold’s 30th issue as originally planned. Instead a certain Remy Etienne LeBeau and Anna Marie WILL. Get your posh frock on Mystique, your little girl is getting married!
Fans will have to read X-Men Gold #30 to see just how the switch occurs, but speculation has been rife ever since the big announcement, that things won’t be going off smoothly. After all, when does any Marvel wedding go off without a hitch? When Kitty had her bachelorette party she was even ‘visited’ by Petey’s ex, Callisto, who warns her not to break his heart. Peter himself had a conversation with Kurt, shortly before his recent abduction, where he was worried she was getting cold feet. What we do know is that Wolverine will pull the same ‘walking behind the scenes’ move he’s been making since his return way back in Marvel Legacy.
He will watch the wedding procession from a rooftop and wishes the happy couple well, clearly acting as guardian against interlopers who might spoil the big day. Then we see Kurt talking to Peter about how lucky they are and he feels inspired to pop the question to Rachel. At this point the big switch hasn’t happened it seems.
But it will be Remy, who steals the idea after having an epiphany during an off the cuff chat he has while seeing his true love stood next to Ororo at the bar and surprises everyone. Clearly this will be after the original wedding is called off, based on his following statement here, while on bended knee and that of Kitty, who apparently gives her blessing. And it looks like there are no hard feelings, if the smiles on the faces of herself and Peter are anything to go by.
Neither can we Rogue. I will resist the urge to show the final page of the issue, but suffice to say you’ll need hankies at the ready. Because of course, she clearly says yes. And of course this time it clearly goes ahead. Unlike that ‘other’ wedding, based on the covers for the new series…..oh wait, I didn’t mention that already? Sorry, in all the excitement I completely forgot!
As if all this weren’t enough, the newly hitched couple will be going on honeymoon in style as they headline the much talked about “X-Classified” title set for release in July. This is it folks, the long speculated title is finally revealed and will be called Mr & Mrs X. Written by none other than Kelly Thompson, who gave us the tremendous bachelorette party story in X-Men Wedding Special, which even featured a chat between Rogue and Kitty that has now gained new significance, and the Rogue & Gambit mini, it will also feature pencils by Oscar Bazaldua and covers by Terry Dodson. As we can already see by the images of #1 and #3 below and some of the interior art, it’s going to be an adventure as only our beloved river rat and thief of hearts could provide, in the same fist flying, card throwing style as the recent Rogue & Gambit mini series. If you didn’t catch that one I suggest you hot foot it to the store now and catch up.
Mr & Mrs X will find the happy couple given a gift in the form of a mysterious package that they are charged with protecting from a veritable Who’s Who of thieves, bandits and downright scoundrels. With every ‘rogue’ in the galaxy trying to steal it, from the likes of Deathbird to Technet, the wedded bliss is going to be in short supply as they have to ensure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. No easy task when the Imperial Guard are breathing down your neck and there’s a Shi’ar rebellion on the horizon.
With the Starjammers and even Deadpool wanting to steal the show, will they ever get the honeymoon they deserve? Featuring variant covers by superstars like J. Scott Campbell, Humberto Ramos and Skottie Young on #1, as well as variant cover for #2 by Jen Bartel and variant cover for #3 by Phil Noto, it is going to be a roller-coaster of a ride for our Mr and Mrs LeBeau.
