NEWS WATCH: Did Marvel Just Retcon Cloak and Dagger as Mutants: Again?

In Cloak and Dagger’s digital comic introduction, once again the inference of “Mutant gene” leaves readers with questions. Was this simply an editorial slip or Dennis Hopeless leaving fans with a very exciting Easter egg?

On June 6th, Marvel.com released the latest Cloak and Dagger series, written by Dennis Hopeless with art by David Messina.

The comic series is a limited run of 6 total comics to be released in tandem with the debut of the live-action television adaptation of the same name set to air on Freeform today which revives the duo and their estranged partnership not only to battle a major threat from the past but to also reintroduce audiences to the characters, both of which have been out of the mainstream for sometime.

Perhaps the words “re-introduction” were given with explicit intent.

Upon turning the cover the interior recap utilizes some surprising choice words raise old questions and debates.

Fans have long bemoaned the retcon of Cloak and Dagger in which the origin story removed them from the mutant lineage and what some say was a premeditated deliberate act during the cold war between Fox and the publisher and turned them instead into mutates who were granted powers. In the amended tale, Doctor Nemesis, after running full genetics scans on Dagger, deduces that their abilities were derived solely from the drug experimentation that changed her and Cloak. Now that Fox is selling their holdings and licensing rights to their Marvel portfolio, the timing certainly looks suspicious.

Then again, editorial oversights and mishaps do happen. Throughout the remainder of the issue, no reference to the word mutant is reiterated again. This leaves writers with yet another open door. The question is will they walk through it or close it once more?

Questions about their real lineage will no doubt begin to swirl once more throughout social media and message boards. The question is was it a simple oversight or is Marvel being dumb like a FOX? Perhaps by accident. Perhaps not.
