SKULLKICKERS is an action-comedy sword & sorcery comic series that ran for 34 issues from 2010-2015, building a loyal audience for its uproarious take on the genre and comics as a whole. Skullkickers is Deadpool by way of Dungeons & Dragons – irreverent, ridiculous, and frantically fourth wall breaking.
Over the past 9 years, the six trade paperbacks and three hardcover collections of Skullkickers have become harder to track down while, at the same time, writer Jim Zub’s fantasy bonafides have grown with work on seminal fantasy titles that include Dungeons & Dragons, Conan the Barbarian, Pathfinder, Samurai Jack, and Red Sonja. Thousands of fantasy fans have enjoyed Jim’s writing on commercial titles, but haven’t dug into the original sword & sorcery series that put him on the map.

Don’t Combust is a slow-burn progression fantasy epic that focuses on two brothers whose lives are changed by a demonic hole that appears in Bisbee, Arizona. That hole, the town destroyed by its appearance, and the demons that spew from the hole, are the central focus for the first half of the story. Ultimately, the hole’s appearance acts as the backdrop for a much larger conflict that reveals itself as the book unfolds over time.
Episode 1, ‘The Combustion Zone’, introduces the initial conflict, the world, the hole, and many vital characters (including our two protagonists, brothers Ezra and Dart). Though the first episode is only the tip of the iceberg, I’ve tried to pack as much as I can into this episode to help show the types of imagery you can expect throughout the rest of the story and in future episodes.
The story as a whole has action, surprises, sadness, and everything in between. Plus the art is stellar, as done by Merinita and William Tengen. Seriously, here’s a look at some panels from future episodes. (Yes, there’s more, but I’ve self-funded so far and I need your help to bring more chapters to the world.)
