The Life and Death of the Brave Captain Suave

Current Funding: $2,826
Funding Goal: $5,000
Days Left: 4
Link: The Life and Death of the Brave Captain Suave

The Life and Death of the Brave Captain Suave is a metatextual comic book series about a homeless man living in Cleveland, Ohio that believes he is an actual superhero.

Written by Joseph Sieracki and drawn by Kelly Williams, Captain Suave is a modern take on Don Quixote, and is collected here for the very first time in a beautiful upgraded softcover!

A homeless man that thinks he’s a superhero befriends an ex-nursing student with a penchant for drugs on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio. The unlikely pair find themselves bouncing from one mishap to another, all while trying to make a small but positive difference in the lives of those they encounter. A hero the city neither needs nor deserves, Captain Suave is a man out of time determined to be a Golden Age superhero. Not unlike Don Quixote of Cervantes’s classic tale, this hero will straddle the line between insanity and benevolence.

Along with his sidekick, Champ, Captain Suave will battle the imaginary forces of evil threatening the fair city of Cleveland. Stopping a wind turbine he mistakes for a hydra from demolishing the city, saving unwitting damsels in distress, and even thwarting real-life robbers, no evildoer is safe from the awesome and quixotic might of Captain Suave!

Why is this important?

A singular take on the superhero genre: Paying tribute to Cleveland’s storied history in comic books, Captain Suave is a hero like no other. Though he is only a superhero of the mind, he will show readers that it doesn’t take superpowers to do what’s right and help others.

Classic literary elements: Blending Golden Age superheroes with Don Quixote, this is a modern take on the Miguel de Cervantes classic, sure to excite both comic book and classic literature readers alike.

Unique visuals: Incorporating both hand-painted watercolors and digital coloring, different artistic styles depict the hero’s fantasy versus what’s happening in reality on the page. Employing a digital dot pattern evoking a Golden Age style of comic book coloring, what the hero believes is happening has a distinctly different feel from the real, painted world.

The Comics Courier is a new biannual print newspaper edited by Tiffany Babb (Popverse, PanelxPanel). Our core goal is to create a space for serious (and silly) writing about comics and to share our love for the medium, the creators, and the comics themselves. Thank you for your support.

DREAMCATCHERS – A Horror Comics One-Shot

Current Funding: $3,774
Funding Goal: $5,500
Days Left: 5
Link: DREAMCATCHERS – A Horror Comics One-Shot
All Dana wanted was a good night’s sleep… Plagued for years by horrible nightmares, a desperate Dana Arlin sought the help of the mysterious EREBOS INSTITUTE. All Dana wanted was a good night’s sleep; what she got instead was a truth even more terrible than the nightmares themselves: The monsters in Dana’s dreams are real, and they are using innocent victims like her as conduits into our world.

In exchange for the Institute’s help, Dana has agreed to work on their behalf, hunting and killing the very creatures she’s unwittingly released into our reality.

But what if these (literal) nightmares are merely harbingers of an even greater evil?

DREAMCATCHERS began life as an 8-page short story for a friend’s planned anthology. Alas, the anthology project fell apart before the book saw the light of day but after artist Nima Sorat (Graveslinger, Monster Attack Network) had already completed the linework for our contribution. The story stuck with me, and when my friend John Bivens (Spread, The Devil’s Red Bride) reached out to see if I might like to collaborate, the concept immediately sprang to mind as a perfect vehicle for John’s sensibilities. I rewrote the script into a full issue-length story for John.

The Most Dangerous Game has been adapted many times including as an RKO pre-code horror movie by the same name.

He’s been hunting the people who wash up on his island and he wants Sanger to join him on his next hunt.

Sanger refuses. If Sanger won’t hunt with him, then he can be the prey as far as Zaroff is concerned.

Sanger is given a knife, clothes and some advice by Zaroff and his armed bodyguard.

If he survives three days, he can leave. If not, his head goes on Zaroff’s trophy wall. Left with no choice, Sanger takes off into the surrounding jungle.

The hunt is on
