Comics Are Dying: The Comic

A satirical journey through the history of the comic book industry recounted by 100 one-page comics by 1 writer and 100 artists.
A Comic Book About the Comics Industry, By the Comics Industry, For the Comics Industry

Current Funding: $8,714
Funding Goal: $5,000
Days Left: 6
Link: Comics Are Dying: The Comic

For the better part of a century, people have said that comic books are dying. Crisis after crisis, the comic book industry has survived and lives to this day. So, to celebrate its harrowing journey into the 21st century, a satirical OGN about the history of comic books has taken shape. Introducing the ironically named Comics Are Dying: The Comic – a brief history and celebration of the comic book industry!

Curated and written by Louis Southard, a 24-year-old comic book writer (THE BLACKOUT BOMBSHELL / MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE / VILLAINS SEEKING HERO), the book is about the history of comic books using one-page short story comics with a new artist for every page. The main goal was to create a diverse team of over 100 people featuring a collective of established as well as up-and-coming artists from all walks of life for this. Comics Are Dying: The Comic exists to create a fun, educational, tongue-in-cheek, parodic, and optimistic book to help attract new readers, give artists jobs, and help comic book stores. With your support, we can make this book a reality and spread some great art into the world.

OUTCASTS

Current Funding: $814
Funding Goal: $3,000
Days Left: 10
Link:  OUTCASTS

OUTCASTS is a gritty sci-fi/action story about Aaron, a former super-soldier afflicted with chronic asthma, who is cast out of the covert government program that created him. Armed with his specialized Battlehaler, Aaron takes to the streets as a vigilante, seeking redemption. His quest for reinstatement leads him to uncover a deep-rooted conspiracy that threatens to unravel the very fabric of his society.

Get ready for the next dope sci-fi story from Stone Harbor Comics, OUTCASTS, a gritty action series that’s all about knowing your worth. Meet Aaron, a former super-soldier and candidate of the Pinnacle Task Force, who, despite being their best, was cast out due to the development of his “imperfection” – chronic asthma, a side effect of the very procedure meant to enhance him. Never accepting his fate, Aaron becomes a vigilante with the aid of his high-tech Battlehaler, half staff, half inhaler. He now takes on the city’s worst by night while pretending to be just another office drone by day. But when a sinister plot surfaces, involving military-grade weapons and a vengeful inventor set on chaos, Aaron and his estranged friend Imara are thrust into an alliance to save the city he swore to protect.

Growing up with asthma, this project holds a special place in my heart. I was never a fan of the stereotypical representation of people who have asthma in storytelling. We’re always the nerdy, weak kid who can’t take the pressure. My goal is to help flip that depiction completely on its head. That’s why OUTCASTS isn’t just another comic book to me. It’s a story about not giving up, about fighting for your place in the world, even when the world doesn’t want to give you one.

This campaign is geared towards completing the first chapter in the series, which is an introduction to Aaron and his vigilantism on full display. It’s a blended style between Manga and Western comics with its black and white pages and splashes of color for heightened moments. With your help, we can bring this epic tale to life. We’re talking big battles, heart-stopping moments, and a story that’ll stick with you long after you’re done. But we need your support to make it happen. This is your chance to jump on board with something special, to help us shake up the sci-fi scene with a story about beating the odds and finding your purpose against all obstacles.

Let’s make OUTCASTS happen together. Chip in, spread the word, and let’s show everyone that anyone can don the cape, asthma and all!

American Greatness #1

The last 8 years of American politics, distilled into a revolting, thousand-foot tall monster tromping through the American heartland.

Current Funding: $1,038
Funding Goal: $3,500
Days Left: 23
Link: American Greatness #1

Deep within the suburban jungle of Cincinnati, a monster has emerged, bursting out of the Rumpke Sanitary Landfill. Taking its name from its birthplace, Rumpke is a thousand feet tall, has revolting personal habits, and might be vaguely familiar to readers, considering his orange-tinged hair and proportionally tiny hands. What do Americans do when such a creature appears, lumbers around at random, and occasionally defiles a local landmark? For millions, the choice is obvious – worship it.

New York journalist Fred Millard is assigned to report on the exploits of the monster, his bizarre fandom, and the ludicrous internet conspiracy theories that have caught fire since his appearance. Fred quickly learns that the absurdity of Rumpke’s fandom leads to more serious consequences than mere internet hysteria – when serious illness starts to spread in those closest to the monster, its biggest fans refuse to follow the government’s guidance of masking and social distancing, worsening the outbreak. And most appalling of all, one conspiracy theory inspires a violent mob to assemble in Washington, DC and assault a federal building, with deadly results.

A funhouse-mirror reflection of modern American politics, AMERICAN GREATNESS is a raunchy and hilarious political satire comic series. With art by Seb Valencia, it was written for all of us who are exhausted, baffled, and even terrified by the insanity of American politics in recent times.

AMERICAN GREATNESS #1 is the first issue of a planned five or six issue series that distills modern American politics into a revolting, thousand-foot monster, tromping through the heartland of America.

Billionaire Gary Laurie has a dream—to be the first person to safely send people to Mars. The problem is it can’t be done, and he’s losing billions in the process.

Desperate to save his dream, he turns the mission over to Hanna Von Fleischer, a brilliant, gorgeous, and mysterious woman who promises to get the crew to Mars and back.

Oh, and she also happens to be a 300-year-old vampire.

Vampires on Mars blends the over-the-top vibe and humor of CHEW with the claustrophobic hunt of Aliens.

Gods Among Men #1

BREAKING BAD meets TRAINSPOTTING in this socially disruptive true crime story. We invite you to peer through the looking glass.

Current Funding: $$2,412
Funding Goal: $985
Days Left: 2
Link: Gods Among Men #1
One man’s desperate bid to save his restaurant and provide a better life for his family takes him on a descent into the criminal realm. A journey that reveals the familiar world of the mundane and the ethereal nature of the narcotic world really aren’t so different after all. BREAKING BAD x TRAINSPOTTING x TRUE CRIME coalesce into a whole more unfathomable than the sum of its parts.
Jason Lee finds himself sitting atop a failing business, despite being sold the notion that doing everything by the book pays off. For a man who refuses to accept failure, with more than just himself to look after, desperate times truly call for desperate measures.
Gods Among Men is best captured with the term, “socially disruptive narco-noir” – imagine the film Trainspotting but from the perspective of the dealer. Fans of true-crime, drama, social commentary, and even business and politics – this is the story for you. We are particularly appealing to readers who seek a more sophisticated and edgier comic book. Tonally, our series strives to balance levity with drama to convey a realistic sense of tone, leaning towards either side where appropriate.

Vince Locke unveils a zombie apocalypse. Andrea Mutti depicts tragedy in outer space. MK Perker illustrates a stunning banquet for the gods. Glenn Fabry pulls back the curtain on a creepy collector of classical art And DaNi and Jason Howard play with an ever-changing “untethered” reality, which threatens to swallow our hero and everything we have ever known.

Asa and his crew, now working with the Feds, begin to tackle the bigger players on the field. The mob bosses in Las Vegas start to take notice. As his ambitions climb, so do Asa’s addictions: fame, women, danger, booze and pills. Will he eventually be taken down by the Mob? By his own addictions?

Current Funding: $17,880
Funding Goal: $300
Days Left: 26
Link: Miskatonic High – Volume 3: The Lost Souls

Welcome to Miskatonic High, the comic series about the monsters who reside in a small New England town and the teenagers who ride the bus with them. Inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and skewered with our sarcastic sense of humor, this is a series unlike anything you’ve read. But don’t worry, you don’t need to have read the works of H.P. Lovecraft (or attended a small New England high school) to enjoy this series. If you’ve ever dealt with any kind of monster (tentacled or not), this series is for you!

The story so far

We’ve successfully kickstarted 22 issues and a few other fun stories! And for some reason, people keep coming back for more. Clearly high school left them nearly as deranged as us!

So far, we’ve learned that in the rustic hills of  a small New England Berkshire town lies the prestigious Miskatonic High School. When the Community Service Club went on a field trip, they were launched on a strange journey that birthed a terrible evil into our century (even worse than TikTok… okay, almost as evil as TikTok).

In this third volume (collecting issues 14-22), Alex, Matt, Ren, Simon, Sarah and Anton have split up for the winter break, each confronting the things haunting… and hunting… them. Simon and Ren find themselves trying to uncover a family secret in the Philippines; Sarah and Matt get stranded in a little village that isn’t as perfect as it seems; Alex digs through the seamy underbelly of Miskatonic’s eldritch community to find a missing girl; Matt’s family moves into his grandfather’s house, but something is locked up in the attic; and Anton partners up with a certain ReAnimator to try to get his body back.

You know, your normal warm, holiday vacation…

Will Dakota stick to her resolution and go home unf***ed? Or will she realize that maybe her priorities are in the wrong place and it’s okay to stick around for someone who exceeds your standards? The answer may not surprise you!

The year is 2068. The place, Fontainebleau forest, ancient home of some of France’s mightiest monarchs on the outskirts of what was once Paris. The post-apocalyptic society of Pan survives by growing rice and scavenging among the ruins of a destroyed civilization. Their precarious existence comes under threat when the powerful, technologically advanced Federation of Fortuna forces them into a dangerous choice—submit to Fortuna’s rule, or try to best them in a barbaric, ritualized game known as Celestial Mechanics. Pan’s only hope? A hot-headed outcast they’d rejected for being “un-Pan”: a girl named Aster
