Comic Watch’s Kickstarter Korner for January 14, 2023

It’s that time of the week for  Comic Watch’s Kickstarter Korner when we spotlight some projects that we hope you will support and help spread the word about these great indie titles and don’t forget to check out our previous posts to see if some of those campaigns are still running:

Evie and the Helsings #1

Evie Van Helsing just wants to rock.

For centuries, the Van Helsing family has protected humanity from things that go bump in the night. The last protector has fallen, and the mantle goes to her one surviving heir. The problem is, Evie Van Helsing just wants to rock.

Written by Steve Bryant (Athena Voltaire, The Catch, Ghoul Scouts) and drawn by Don Cardenas (Spend the Night, Off into the SunsetPacks of the Low Country), with colors by Jason Millet (Athena Voltaire, Archie Versus Predator), Evie and the Helsings is the first issue of a 4-issue miniseries that follows Evie’s adventures as she navigates life between two worlds.

It’s like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets This is Spinal Tap by way of Ash Versus Evil Dead.

HOPE: A New Comic Book series

An all-new sci-fi horror Neo-Western comic by Justin Gray & Branko Jovanovic

The people of a remote Alaskan town are in crisis. With a failing power supply, temperatures that plunge to sub-zero levels, and a mysterious illness spreading throughout the population, they are on the brink of extinction. As if their situation wasn’t dire enough, there’s something else lurking just beyond the mountain tunnel that separates them from the outside world. A gritty neo-western horror comic like no other, that follows a group of determined souls as they fight to restore power, battle the elements, and confront these unknown creatures in order to survive. The events that follow will test the limits of physical, mental, and spiritual endurance.

Neo-western, for those that are unfamiliar, is a sub-genre, consisting of modern variations of old western themes. This sub-genre often includes rebellious protagonists of the anti-hero sort, vast landscapes, and rugged scenery, and occasionally features a strong dose of violence and gun-fighting.

ThoughtScape Comics #1-3

Issues #1, #2 and #3 of a new sci-fi anthology comic book series in the tradition of 2000 AD, Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone.

ThoughtScape Comics is an anthology series serving up sci-if action, thrills and chills in the tradition of 2000 AD, Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone. Anything is possible in these taut tales of trauma and transformation, of people pushed past their limits by the gods and monsters they meet – or become – at the edges of technology and reality.

The first three issues of ThoughtScape Comics run from 48 to 60 pages long each, and feature both serialized and self-contained stories.

The Tunnel Under the World

Graphic novel adaptation of the classic sci-fi story by Frederik Pohl

This graphic novel is an adaptation of the classic sci-fi story first published in 1955 in Galaxy magazine, “The tunnel under the world” by Frederik Pohl is a terrific science fiction account about consumerism, advertising, and robots.

“On the morning of October 15th, Guy Burckhardt woke up screaming out of a dream. He could still hear and feel the sharp, ripping-metal explosion, the violent heave that had tossed him furiously out of bed, the searing wave of heat. No need to mention the splintered ribs, and the salt bubble in his throat, and the agonised knowledge that this was death.”

The story. now in the public domain. has been adapted in 1969 into a low-budget movie by Luigi Cozzi, into a play in the X Minus One radio show, and, in my opinion, inspired movies such as The Truman Show.
