Comic Watch’s Krowdfunding Korner For January 28, 2023

This week the Kickstarter Korner is getting a new look and name…enter The Krowdfunding Korner.

Kickstarter isn’t the only place indie creators go to fund their projects. There is Zoop, Indiegogo and Crowdfundr, just to name a few.

We also want to try an highlight those projects that still need a push along with those that are pursuing the fun stretch goals.

Strap in and let’s see what projects are out there that you should be checking out:

Pink Midnight Presents: The Butterfly House
by Paul Allor, Juan Romera & Claire Napier

LGBTQ writer, Paul Allor, best known for his work with TMNT, Power Rangers, GI Joe bring Pink Midnight Presents: The Butterfly House, to Zoop. This the first in a planned series of weird, one-shot comic books from writer Paul Allor, artist Juan Romera and editor Claire Napier, all presented in Juan’s stunning black-and-white art.

This first issue is a silent descent into one person’s nightmare, as our protagonist enters the titular Butterfly House — and soon discovers they may never be able to leave. This is a deeply personal story for Paul, part existential horror story, part allegory for Paul’s own discovery of their gender identity.

The Butterfly House will take you places you will not expect, and leave you pondering its implications long after you’ve reached the last page.

Octopus: A Memoir of Flailing

The subjectively true story of trying not to turn into an octopus, distracting myself with sex clubs, drinking and messy relationships.

Octopus is a 144-page graphic memoir about me, Richard Fairgray – the writer/artist of Blastosaurus, Black Sand Beach, Haunted Hill, SHED, Four Color Heroes and literally hundreds of other books. I’m a blind comic artist with a chemical imbalance in my brain that allows me to process images at an incredible speed,  remember too much and almost never sleep. This book is 7 connected stories that capture key turning points in my life across 18 months as I try to kill myself, get divorced, break up with my boyfriend, steal a boat, move to Hollywood, live with a surfing philanthropist, meet a nice man and have a lot of wine and regrettable sex. It’s an adult story filled with complicated emotions and steamy sex clubs.

This book was completed in 2020 but was told by everyone not to release it because it could ruin the career I’d built with all-ages content. I did as I was told and put the book away. But, a lot of upheaval in the world and in my own life has made me realize that I need to live unapologetically, and releasing this story is a big part of that.

CROSSROADS | A Mystery Horror Comic by Beeku Comics

Road trips can be killer.

Brothers Everest and Temperance have been given a simple task: spread their estranged father’s ashes on a cross-country roadtrip following a route the family would take when they were children. Once close friends, the brothers haven’t seen each other in three years, and neither are as they remembered: Everest has gone from a promising young police officer to a pill-popping drunk following the loss of his partner, while newlywed Temperance is balancing law school and an ever-growing panic disorder.

As the brothers learn to navigate their relationship again, the weeks-long road trip takes an unexpected turn: their late father was a urban legend hunter, and their inheritance (like it or not) is to pick up where he left off.
