What a time to be a fan of DC Comics! As of now, they just launched a new streaming service, The DC Universe, which let fans take a deep, immersive look into everything DC, and also have finally delivered a live-action version of Titans. And quite frankly, that’s just the tip; The Arrowverse announced Elseworlds as to their yearly crossover and fans have been on a ride ever since.
The stars of the Arrowverse have been putting work in, releasing photo-after-photo hyping the event to almost crisis levels. The biggest question surrounding all these photos and quotes: Can we discern anything that might tell what the event might actually be about? No. Not whatsoever!
Right now, we know the plot surrounds some guy named John Deegan and Arkham Asylum. Also, the Monitor shows up, and yeah, that’s pretty huge news given they only show up during the most dire of times. Which is why most websites are declaring this to be Crisis On Infinite Earths; which is one the greatest comics books ever written, and did the impossible task of making DC Comics’ ever growing continuity manageable by killing off every Earth, except two.
But if you’ve been watching The Flash, then one might guess that is where they’re heading in S5 with their whole “Norapoint” story arc. It seems likely that Eobard Thawne is manipulating events to speed up “Flash Vanishes In Crisis” by having Barry’s daughter try to save him before such events. This alone makes it kind of hard to believe we’re going to get Crisis On Infinite Earths.
Why do most people think it’s going to be Crisis On Infinite Earths: Simply, because of The Monitor. Let’s just think for a moment that maybe he needs to tell someone important information, and that’s all. And that person being, Batwoman. We know Bruce Wayne exists on the same Earth as Green Arrow and The Flash, but no signs that he’s actually Batman. We do know, however, there’s a Batman on Supergirl’s Earth. And he’s dead. Which means Batman can’t help, and maybe in the other Earth’s Bruce Wayne has yet to become Batman.
Now, Batwoman could be from any Earth (most likely Earth-1), and The Monitor stops by to tell her she’s the key to stopping the big bad. She is after all Bruce’s cousin and they share a lot of familiar traits. She must help the heroes stop the big bad, which is…Darkseid! That’s right, I’m betting they’re going to try to mainstream Final Crisis. Grant Morrison is an amazing writer, but sometimes his books are beyond confusing. But what about John Deegan? Isn’t he Doctor Destiny? Maybe?
Sadly, no websites have any facts to really give you a certain answer, but only questions to make you truly think about Elseworlds. Final Crisis could be boiled down to the heroes stopping Darkseid from inquiring the Anti-Life Equation. And they need all the help they can get. That seems pretty doable in about 2 hours, right? And then think about Crisis On Infinite Earths…They would need to build a lot of things in order for the story to make sense; even if it’s truncated for TV. There’s something about Final Crisis that just seems to make more sense given that it takes place primarily on Earth. Also, this means that Fourth World is now in play in the Arrowverse. Expect fans to start asking when we’re going to see Mister Miracle and Big Barda?
And so, should you read the DC Comics’ “Crisis” event books before Elseworlds? Yes, they’re amazing. Especially the newest one by Tom King, Clay Mann and Mitch Gerad.
