Firestar Lights Up the Artgerm Variant for West Coast Avengers #1

Marvel revealed a variant cover for November’s relaunch of West Coast Avengers from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Danny Kim. The new title, which reunites the team for a 40th anniversary, features a line-up of Iron Man, War Machine, Spider-Woman, Firestar, and Ultron, seemingly rehabilitated according to the press release. That twist lies at the heart of the series, which is built around Iron Man and War Machine trying to help those searching for redemption.

Duggan discussed the thematic core of the book in the press release, stating:

“Redemption has been on my mind this year, and we’ll see who can be redeemed on the West Coast. It’s a fun action story, but it’s also an Ultron tale – and one of my biggest Marvel swings yet. I previously had the pleasure of writing a pretty great horror story about Ultron wearing Pym’s face, and this is a very different tale with one of my favorite Marvel characters, in one of my favorite legacy titles in the city that has been my home for so long. Wait until you see what Danny Kim is cooking up. Find redemption in November in the city of Angels.”

To spotlight the team, Stanley “Artgerm” Lau provides a cover centered on Firestar as she makes a return to the Avengers. The radiation-powered hero was last seen in Duggan’s X-Men title, working as a mole for the mutants, spying on villainous organization Orchis. The variant cover can be seen below.
