FIRST WATCH Exclusive: Ryan K Lindsey Speaks ‘Beautiful Canvas’ TPB, Listening Yet?

Beautiful Canvas, Creator/writer Ryan K. Lindsay, drawn by Sami Kivela, colored by Triona Farrell, lettered by Ryan Ferrier, was one of Lindsey’s most critically acclaimed titles and received very high acclaim from many in the comics industry and it’s getting the Beautiful Canvas TPB.

I spoke to Ryan this morning about his new trade paperback of Beautiful Canvas, and he told ComicWatch in an exclusive statement,

BEAUTIFUL CANVAS is the kind of story that stews in your brainpan for decades, from watching VHS pulps at an age far too young, to scouring secondhand bookstores once I learned to ride my bike beyond the pain threshold and find the good out of town stuff. The influences in this story are wildly eclectic, and completely personal, and the result is Lon Eisley, who is my favourite character I’ve ever created.  To get to create her and her warped gonzo pulp world with Sami Kivela and Triona Farrell only makes it all the better, and more beautiful.  This story is personal, insane, and completely life-changing – as all your great loves should be. We hope you enjoy.” -Ryan K. Lindsay

Ryan is an interesting character, there is no question, but I’ve followed his work since I first picked up Beautiful Canvas #1 and was literally blown away by the beautifully dementing agony that is the imagery and colors so masterfully executed by Kiveli and Ferrell and for Lindsey’s storytelling, well it’s likely that it will literally leave you in withdrawal!  So listen when I tell you if you did not Beautiful Canvas, you don’t have long to place your order!

Beautiful Canvas is the story of Lon Eisley who is a hit-[wo]man.  While dealing with the shock of discovering her girlfriend is pregnant, Lon gets hired for a new assignment: to kill a small child.

In a bold declaration of uncertainty, she saves the boy and hits the road, despite the fact her boss clearly wanted him dead for a reason.

This warped crime dystopia delves into the emotional dichotomy of creator/destroyer as Lon tries to connect the two very different worlds she now inhabits.

From Sami Kivela (Chum) & Ryan K Lindsay (Negative Space, DC Writers Workshop) comes a gonzo tale of personal discovery, animal/hybrid hit troupes and reactive pyrokinesis.

Ryan also said if you wanted the Beautiful Canvas trade paper,  “you want to ensure your shop has this book waiting for you on February 21, you have to ask them to order it for you now.   Comic shops have a final order date this Monday so please consider heading into your LCS now,  picking up this week’s stack, and letting them know you want Beautiful Canvas.  Success indie books live and die on every single order, I promise. [and Ryan is an indie aficionado as far as putting out books that top everything else on the shelf!

Donny Cates calls this book “Absolutely fucking mental. In the most beautiful and elegant way imaginable.”

Lindsay made sure to remind me, Sami Kivela and Triona Farrell on art are an insanely gorgeous pairing.   They make everything look amazing, and their storytelling decisions are also phenomenal.

We ended up with an 8.4 review score on ComicBookRoundUp.com

Lindsey expresses how pleased he is to have seen the book land so well with such a variety of review sites.

“But I’ve already read Beautiful Canvas in single issues, what should I do?”

If you’ve already read Beautiful Canvas and loved it, which my recent survey says is a few of you, please consider buying a copy to put away as a present for a friend.

I also consider this miniseries one of my very best works, so I think a whole bunch of you are going to love this story. It’s a whole lot of what I love jammed into one narrative.-Ryan K. Lindsey
