FIRST WATCH: It’s Time To Astonish Them…Once More. Preview of Astonishing X-Men #13

There’s an ‘All New’ Astonishing team in town this Fourth of July…. Expect fireworks!

WARNING: This article contains MAJOR spoilers!!

When Charles Soule finishes his run with #12 and ‘A Man Called X’ expect a whole new era to begin as Matthew Rosenberg takes over writing duties and will be joined by Greg Land, Jay Leisten & Frank D’Armata for his first arc. When Rosenberg recently spoke on Twitter to reveal his role he added “In issue #13 myself and Greg Land come in to tell an all new story with an all new team. It’s got a lot of nods to some of my favorite stories in X-Men history but also is going to be pushing things forward and challenge the future.” Fresh from completing his New Mutants: Dead Souls miniseries Rosenberg will clearly be taking the bull by the horns, tackling the first meeting between Havok and the Avengers since his return to form. And it doesn’t go well.

It begins with Havok taking out a giant monster, which hearkens back to a similar event in Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men, where Cyclops team co-operate so well with the Fantastic Four in taking down a monster terrorising the city. Not so much the case this time, as we see Iron Man admonish Havok for his brash behavior, with some trademark Stark snark, and a dash of hypocricy to boot, revealing a deal had been made with Mole Man, which Havok’s actions have now set back. So when Captain America tells you to take a break from being a super hero what else do you do?

Well…form a team of X-Men of course, along with Colossus, Warpath and Dazzler and Beast as co-leader. But can his team trust him? One thing is for sure, the Avengers certainly don’t. And to top it off the machinations of Miss Sinister continue after the Mothervine arc and she is merrily experimenting on children for her own ends. Or as she puts it “something for all of humanity to enjoy.”

That is, until the Reavers meddle in her plans before she gets to even draw blood. Led by Donald Pierce, the Reavers also begin causing more trouble with a new weapon. And with no Cyclops around, it falls to the younger Summers brother to fix things.

So with his inversion now reversed, Colossus still reeling from the shock of Kitty’s decision, Warpath jumping ship from Weapon X, Dazzler back in the fold after her return in the self titled X-Song one shot and Beast out to prove his worth once more, things are surely off to a dramatic start for Havok. With all this AND news of a final member still to be added to the roster, we can expect 13 to be a lucky number and most assuredly a great jumping on point. Fourth of July is all set to go off with some REAL fireworks and much celebration for many reasons this year.
