Gaurdians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 & More MCU Specifics Confirmed!

Marvel fans have long been speculating when James Gunn’s third installment to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise would be released and now, thanks to director/screenwriter James Gunn himself, we know when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released! 2020!

The fan-favorite director took to Twitter over the weekend to have a Q&A session with fans and when asked about the third Guardians movie, Gunn tweeted that it would happen, in fact, he explained how the Avengers: Infinity War film will act as the catalyst! Infinity War will bring together the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy together for the first time and will pave the way for the 2020 release of GotG Vol. 3!  He said he and Kevin Feige have been discussing the release dates for future MCU projects and what’s scheduled between now and 2020!

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and company have been sitting on a few 2020 dates, May 1, August 7, and November 1, and speculation’s been running rampant on which movies would get those dates locked up.  First, there are a few things to take into consideration.

Now with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 confirmed as one of these three film release dates for 2020, we’re left to speculate which of the other franchises will get the two remaining dates.  That being said, with Disney’s purchase of FOX, the X-Men Cinematic Universe will soon be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also consider both the closely approaching Black Panther and Avengers Infinity War, are in all likelihood going to break box office records and Disney is going to have to rethink these constraints of three movies a year and get realistic.

James Gunn has already said that Guardians Vol 3 will help set up the next generation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Writing on Facebook, he said: “It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond,”  He later added,  “I will be working side-by-side with [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.

These are also huge factors to consider when thinking about the future of the MCU and what we do not know.  News broke earlier this week that Marvel had hired a writer to handle the script for a solo Black Widow film, news of an X-men favorite Kitty Pryde feature film already in preproduction,  and rumors abound that Hawkeye is going to receive his own film, plus Chris Hemsworth said he has talked to director Taika Waititi on a potential Thor 4 film.  All this, and remember you saw it here first, but the MCU will be expecting new films sooner than later with plans for a Fantastic Four film already underway, and sources have confirmed that we will see the Silver Surfer, and even Gunn said Adam Warlock would be making his first appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but I question this as it would make sense to see Warlock make an appearance in Avengers 3 or 4 Infinity War, but either way, I think we can count on an Adam Warlock film as well.

Another strong possibility and a near-lock for one of the 2020 dates, one would think would be a sequel to Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange (2016) as Benedict Cumberbatch has been speculated to be an anchor in a potential post-Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Whatever the case, we now know for certain that Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 will grace the silver screen just over two years from now.
