In November we did a lead in article about the new Witchblade series from Image with a brief history and we predicted it was set to be well received by fans. Well, we are pleased to see we were right as Image has announced that issue #1 has sold out in little over a week since release and is to be fast-tracked for a second printing.
The new series from writer Caitlin Kittredge and artist Roberta Ingrata featuring all-new title character Alex Underwood has launched to critical acclaim drops readers right into an exciting story from the start with Alex Underwood shot and left to die on a rooftop but instead she becomes the new host of the Witchblade and though saves her on the brink of death there is a price to pay as Alex finds herself embroiled in a shadow world where Demons walk amongst us on the snowy streets of the Big Apple. Those demons want her dead but Alex has been chosen for a reason and will not be going down without a fight!
Image and Witchblade co-creator Marc Silvestri had this to say on hearing the news:
“Issue #1 has sold out! Wow, thank you to all the fans for supporting this bold new chapter in the Witchblade saga! And thank you Caitlin Kittredge, Roberta Ingranata and Bryan Valenza for your creative vision,” said Silvestri. “It takes a truly talented team to make a book this good!”
And the praise doesn’t stop there:
“I dug the hell out of this first issue and am excited to see where this series goes. I guess I’m a Witchblade fan now.” —Nerdist
“The art of Roberta Ingranata and colorist Bryan Valenza is the highlight of the issue, as every panel has a sense of urgency to its composition and the splash of bright colors is restrained until a bloody explosion is shown with a vibrancy for emphasis. It’s a very post-Jessica Jones comic, but the juxtaposition of the trauma-centric themes with the urban fantasy setting make this a comic with a lot of potential.” —Newsarama
“Ingranata and Valenza’s art is stellar. They’ve set this story in a very realistic New York City, that’s also the setting of a horror movie. The deep shadows, the strange angles, all contribute to a story that’s more ghost story than the supernatural superhero of the previous volume of Witchblade.” —ComicBuzz
WITCHBLADE #1 will remain available for purchase across all digital platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com), the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.
