According to a new report the streaming giant has greenlit a 10 episode series which will see the former Vampire Diaries star lead the cast in a straight to series vampire drama called V-Wars!
The series which is based on the IDW publishing’s franchise written by Jonathan Maberry revolves around the main character Dr. Luther Swan ( who will be played by Somerhalder) that is pulled into a nightmare world when first his best friend is transformed into a bloodthirsty predator by a strange disease as well as bear witness to the breakdown of society as more and more people are infected, all the while trying to understand what is happening while at the same time his friend (whose name is Michael Fane) becomes a vampire leader.
To quote the report in the Hollywood Reporter:
High Park Entertainment produces alongside IDW Entertainment, which will distribute the series worldwide (excluding Canada). 1-800-Missing creators William Laurin and Glenn Davis will serve as showrunners. Brad Turner (Stargate, Stargate Atlantis) will direct and exec produce. High Park’s Eric Birnberg and Thomas Walden will exec produce alongside IDW Entertainment president David Ozer, IDW CEO Ted Adams, and Marada Pictures’ Games Gibb.
“We could not have dreamed of a better choice than Ian Somerhalder to bring his keen understanding of this genre from his years of starring in The Vampire Diaries to lead the cast of V-Wars as Dr. Luther Swann and to be a creative force on this series, as well as to serve as a director this season. We are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring the multifaceted world that Jonathan Maberry created to audiences worldwide.”
For Somerhalder, this deal arrives a year after he has signed off from the popular Vampire Diaries series after an eight-season run.
This project which was announced as far back as 2014 and has seen several changes in affiliation but seems to have found a home at Netflix who continue their massive spend annually ( estimated at 8 Billion dollars) to deliver original new content to a voracious market.
