IDW announced earlier today that Jason Aaron will helm a relaunch of the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles this July. IDW has not revealed any additional information beyond Aaron taking the reins and the date, waiting to share that information later this week. The new run will receive an oversized alpha issue in June with Aaron penning a 10-page story. The new series is also set to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Turtles original comic run.
Jason Aaron discussed his approach to the Turtles in the press release, stating:
“Launching a new TMNT comic series in the midst of the characters’ 40th anniversary is clearly one of those dream jobs of all comic book dream jobs. Especially for me, a kid who first fell in love with the Turtles all those years ago because of that original Mirage Studios series, buying those groundbreaking issues fresh off the rack, comics that kicked you in the face with their action-packed grit and gloriously raw attitude. I couldn’t be more honored and thrilled to get to add to that esteemed legacy of comic book face-kicking, especially as part of an amazing IDW run that has expanded the world and timeline of the Turtles in such daring and exciting ways. In terms of what’s to come, the kid in me wants you to know that you can expect some good old-fashioned grit, a sprinkle of dark, new attitude and all the bone-cracking action that four mutated ninja brothers can possibly handle.”
The current run from IDW is approaching its 150th issue (plus a handful of annuals, an event, and a series of one-shots and limited series). The critically acclaimed run has seen a host of talent working on the series, including writer/artist Sophie Campbell, artist Dan Duncan, original TMNT creator Kevin Eastman, and more. Presumably the alpha issue in June will provide an epilogue to the run, which is set to end with April’s issue 150.
