Chad Burdette
Jacopo Camagni, the Italian artist known for his work on Marvel titles such as Scarlet Witch, various X-Men titles, and more, passed away Sunday following complications from heart surgery at the age of 48.
Before his international breakout in 2008 after winning Marvel’s ChesterQuest talent search, in 2008 held at New York Comic Con. Camagni made his debut in 1998, illustrating an original graphic novel dedicated to Lupin III, under the supervision of Monkey Punch, the character’s creator.
His association and work with Marvel began in 2009, where he worked on titles such as as Hawkeye, Longshot, S.W.O.R.D., Captain Marvel, X-Men: Red, Uncanny X-Men, The Vision And Scarlet Witch, Star Wars, Deadpool, Deadpool The Duck, and the current Shadows OF Tomorrow title, Generation X-23. He was also known for his work alongside Steve Orlando, reinventing and adding to Wanda Maximoff’s legacy over several Scarlet Witch series.
Camagni, an openly and proud gay man, contributed to multiple Pride anthologies and covers such as Marvel’s 2021 Marvel Voices: Pride issue, Pride variants such as 2021’s Star Wars Bounty Hunters #13 (Dark Horse), and Dark Horse’s book The Pride, about LGBTQ+ heroes fed up that straight heroes get all the attention.
Along with his work for Marvel Comics, Camagni was a part of creator-owned projects with writer Marco B. Bucci, such as the urban fantasy’s Nomen Omen andl Arcadia, its seque published by the Italian publsiher Panini Comics and Image Comics. He also worked on the series Simulacri and Sergio Bonelli Editore, creating the color volume Groucho Quarto, dedicated to Dylan Dog’s historic assistant.
