Jean Grey Goes Cosmic to Save Nova in Upcoming PHOENIX Series

From the ashes of Krakoa, a new Phoenix series relaunches from writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Alessandro Miracolo this July. Joining yesterday’s announced X-Force, Phoenix  helps to kick off the second wave of new X-Men titles after Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X wrap up the seminal Krakoa era. Those two series, along with X-Men: Forever, have put Jean Grey and the Phoenix at the forefront of mutant-king’s last stand against Orchis and Enigma, a Sinister ascended Dominion.

Stephanie Phillips spoke about her cosmic approach to the series in the press release from Marvel, stating:

“Jean is one of the most powerful characters I’ve ever written. The beauty and challenge to Jean is that she is imbued with a cosmic force alongside the morals, shortcomings, and empathy of a human being. The dichotomy between those two is something incredibly special about Jean, and means that she is constantly doing a dance between humanity and absolute power. So, that dance is what we hope to have on full display in this story… a cosmic ballet that shows how beautiful the Phoenix Force can be when working in tandem with Jean Grey. And let me assure you, Alessandro Miracolo has made that cosmic dance look absolutely gorgeous.”

In the new title, Jean Grey finds herself reborn after an experience in the White Hot Room, clad in a new costume. She receives a distress call from Nova, who recently connected with the X-Men as Mars/Arrako became an intergalactic hub, and ventures into deep space to help a doomed spaceship on the edge of a black hole.

The press release also featured Miracolo describing the cosmic scope of the book, stating:

“This is fantastic! Being an X-Men fan since I was a kid, I’m so happy to work on such an important character like Phoenix, and Stephanie’s writing has been incredible! Depicting Phoenix out in the cosmos and unleashing her energy has been thrilling and simply epic, and there’s also really emotional moments that I hope to make the most of. I wish I could say more but I hope everyone is excited because this will be fun!”

Alongside the announcement, Marvel also released a look at Yasmine Putri’s main cover for issue #1, which can be seen below.
