Juan Antonio Gimenez Lopez (born November 16, 1943) has passed at the age of 76 due to complications from the COVID-19 virus that is sweeping the globe, according to loved ones and colleagues. The Argentine artist was best known for his Metabarons saga, launched in 1992 but his work spanned generations as easily as it crossed oceans, with work in Spain, France, Italy, the UK, and the US. His attention to technical and historical detail has been long lauded and his style is one that will be surely missed and remembered fondly by many fans.
There is no doubt among fandom that this time is one fraught with the losses of a particular generation of writers and artists that have come to define the medium we hold so dear. Juan Gimenez was among that generation but to lose such a soul due to a global pandemic rather than just “being their time” is a savage blow to the international comics community.
We here at Comic Watch urge you and your loved ones to stay safe. Follow your local guidelines for sheltering at home. Wash your hands. Disinfect as needed and limit your contact, particularly with those at risk, even if you aren’t showing symptoms. Only together can we flatten the curve and minimize these effects on a global scale.
Farewell, Juan. Rest in Power and thanks for all the stories.
