A Good Sport

by Soizick Jaffre

A Good Sport is a graphic memoir from French cartoonist Soizick Jaffre.

Current Funding: $1,341
Funding Goal: $6,000
Days Left: 18
Link: A Good Sport

A Good Sport is a graphic memoir written and drawn by French cartoonist Soizick Jaffre, detailing her participation in the 2018 Gay Games, her lifelong love of athletics, and her own personal search for freedom. This memoir is visually rich with Jaffre’s colorful, expressive illustration style that runs the gamut from realistic portrayal to eye-popping surrealism. A Good Sport deftly balances both personal and world history to paint a picture of feminist triumph and queer self-determination.

Jaffre’s journey takes her from the beaches of France to the streets of Saigon, from the cafes of Tel Aviv to the bowling alleys of America. Along the way we learn some of the history of the Gay Games and their origins in Olympian Tom Waddell’s fight against discrimination. We also see how the Games provide a gathering point for a world of queer athletes whose drive to compete is also an expression of their personal struggles for equal rights in their home countries. Throughout A Good Sport, Jaffre makes the connection between one’s right to participate in a chosen sport and the “game of freedom” that we all must play to become our best selves.

A Good Sport is a full-color trade paperback over 150 pages in length, published by award-winning imprint Stacked Deck Press. It features an introduction by cartoonist and comics scholar Justin Hall and a foreword by Gay Games organizer Pascale Reinteau. A Good Sport has something to inspire, inform, and delight readers from all walks of life.

Age of Canaan

Follow the gods of Canaan as they navigate celestial warfare and moral dilemmas, weaving a captivating tale of myth and humanity. Brought to you by Inkwell Award-winning creator Nir Levie

Current Funding: $6,760
Funding Goal: $3,000
Days Left: 12
Link: Age of Canaan

In the realm of gods and heroes, Akhat, adorned with a divine bow, faces the wrath of Anat, the passionate goddess, who covets his enchanted weapon. Akhat’s bold defiance sparks a furious vendetta, and as Anat dispatches her formidable falcon warrior to end his tale, an unexpected hero, Paghat, fueled by grief and rage, steps forward to rewrite the destiny set by the gods.

Embark on a thrilling adventure with the Ancient gods of Canaan in a dynamic fantasy graphic novel interweaving five tales from the 13th century BC Ugaritic chronicles. From epic battles mirroring the seasons to tragic vengeance and divine conflicts, each story unfolds in a captivating tapestry of action. The collection concludes with a mesmerizing love song, using the oldest surviving written melody to poignantly capture the beauty of nature and love through vivid, action-packed imagery. Join us on this mythical journey by supporting the project – where gods clash, heroes rise, and epic tales await. Your backing makes the magic happen!

Delving into the vast tapestry of human mythological history reveals an abundance of narratives, with only a fraction standing the relentless test of time. The stories that endure are often the ones co-opted by major religions, leaving behind a concealed wealth of untapped tales. As a descendant of Jewish heritage, my fascination lies in narratives untouched by the fingerprints of contemporary religious ideologies. Exploring mythological concepts linked to the Levant, I unearthed an epic literary source that remains largely unscathed. The Ugaritic texts unveil the Canaan ideology through a rich tapestry of myths and legends, a worldview deemed pagan by modern standards. The ancient Canaanite society’s focus on nature, encompassing farming, animals, seasons, and the ebb and flow of droughts and rains, echoes through these texts. In the modern era, there’s a resurging interest in these elemental themes, rendering these stories not relics of the past, but instead, surprisingly relevant and resonant in today’s world.

MUTINY: BLACK GIRL MAGIK#1

It’s STAR WARS meets THE WIZ in this brand new action-adventure comic-book from a Black Femmes creative team!

Current Funding: $7,676
Funding Goal: $8,999
Days Left: 9
Link:  MUTINY: BLACK GIRL MAGIK#1
Moriyah Pleasant is a charismatic and witty queen with the magic touch. As a successful NYC dating coach with a reputation as an “incel whisperer,” the results don’t lie –– until her latest matchmaking gig goes awry, leading to some irreconcilable differences.
The whole operation goes left when Moriyah discovers her client’s love interest is on the run…but from whomst? Moriyah’s dragged through spacetime and confronted with the tyrant Ezek, an Alchemist consumed with his murderous pursuit to destroy all magik in the universe. Trapped and now wanted for a crime she didn’t commit, she’s not having that!
From the minute the Mutiny: Black GIrl Magik project was put into production, we knew we needed to make it special.  Originally created to be the “First Lady” of FairSquare Comics’ magazine, also named Mutiny, our hero spun out off a conversation between Fabrice Sapolsky and artist extraordinaire ChrisCross. The first take on Miss Mutiny was very much superhero-ey and appeared on the cover of the now sold-out Mutiny Magazine#0 issue (launched on Kickstarter in 2021). Then, we thought: if she’s going to be our mascot, we need to feature her on every issue. And we started to order more illustrations starring Miss Mutiny. After ChrisCross, Karen S. Darboe (Blade), Marcus Williams (Tuskegee Heirs) and, of course, Alitha Martinez (Nubia), gave their own take on Mutiny. We loved Alitha’s “Kill Bill” homage cover so much that we made it our banner for every show we attended. And this is where the magic happened…

Current Funding: $593
Funding Goal: $10,000
Days Left: 15
Link: Seven Dead Stars: A Universe Begins

EVEN DEAD STARS is a space adventure series set in the distant future. Made for fans of Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, the action centers around a renegade named FORM, a helmeted mercenary named UNSECRET, and their mysterious blue dog BUSTER.

WHO ARE UNSECRET AND FORM? Beyond the comic, we’re Grammy-nominated artists/producers who have been creating hit music for more than 20 years. We’ve racked up millions of streams from fans around the world, but we wanted to do something bigger – which is why we dreamed up SEVEN DEAD STARS.

Even though Seven Dead Stars is brand new, we wanted it to feel nostalgic, like a story created in the 1980s that hadn’t been discovered until now. What you see here is only the tip of the iceberg. By partnering with us, you’ll help this story grow into something bigger than we ever imagined!

For this Kickstarter, we’re launching two foundational comics: ISSUE #0, a 24-page origin story of our heroes, and the official GUIDEBOOK, a 34-page overview of the characters and storyline to expect in the future. There’s also variant edition of Issue #0 with a cover by BUTCHER BILLY. In addition, there’s an epic SOUNDTRACK, colorful STICKERS, cool SWAG, and other fun ways for you to show your support for this independently-created comic book universe!

THE FARAWAY #1

A harrowing comic book following a group of RPG enthusiasts trapped in the DARKEST of dark fantasy worlds.

Current Funding: $3,976
Funding Goal: $3,000
Days Left: 6
Link: THE FARAWAY #1

We know the story, right? While playing a fantasy role-playing game, a group of friends accidentally transports themselves into a fantasy world. Therein, they meet a friendly magical gnome who grants them magical weapons and guides them through their adventures. They face dark forces, but they rise into the roles of heroes and reaffirm the lifelong bonds of friendship in the process.

Yeah.

This isn’t that story.

Our heroes are transported into a magical kingdom of warriors and wizards and dragons and catacombs, yes. They meet a friendly magical gnome, yes. They are granted magical artifacts of great power, yes. But, within minutes of arriving in the fantasy world, this group of five college students finds themselves thrown into an adventure that is more horror than high fantasy.

Our heroes have arrived, you see, in the DARKEST if dark fantasy worlds, where the “evil overlord” has already successfully conquered the realm and enslaved all of the free peoples. It is a nightmare realm populated by the most awful monsters and the most cruel sorcerers and warlords.

Think of it as a tale of survival horror… in a land like Mordor… if the corruption of Mordor spread across all of Middle Earth.

Trapped in this violent, vicious, unforgiving, terrifying (and terrifyingly lethal) realm, our heroes struggle for survival as, at every turn, they are faced with malignant monsters, foul magic, and fiendish foes.

Written by master of horror comics Cullen Bunn and illustrated by high-energy artist Vitalii Kalchenko, THE FARAWAY takes the familiar tropes of “gamers trapped in a fantasy world” and turns them on their decapitated head.
