Who Killed Nessie?

Current Funding: $7,535
Funding Goal: $20,000
Days Left: 26
Link: Who Killed Nessie?
Who Killed Nessie?, a new graphic novel by Paul Cornell, the award-winning comics writer, and Rachael Smith, the award-winning comics writer/artist, is a comedy cryptozoological whodunnit about finding confidence through rationality and accepting a world of mysteries… by solving one.

Every year, legendary creatures from all over the world gather for an annual convention. But never has there been a murder.

Lindsay Grockle, a skeptical, rational young woman, agreed to be the manager of an isolated hotel in the Great Lakes to get over a terrible break-up that left her with zero self-confidence. Her partner was romantic, whimsical, a believer. And she kept telling him there were no such things as fairies. She arrives to find the former manager on his way out of the door, as if he’d been freed from a terrible burden. The rest of the staff have all elected to go on leave this weekend.

Every year, Lindsay is told, the cryptids gather here for their annual convention. But never has there been a murder. Suddenly, they can’t trust each other. They’ve locked the doors and prevented all external communication. The only person they can agree on to solve this mystery is Lindsay.

The creative team of Paul Cornell and Racheal Smith sat down with Comic Watch for an interview about the campaign currently running on Zoop

OUTCASTS

Current Funding: $450
Funding Goal: $3,000
Days Left: 19
Link:  OUTCASTS

OUTCASTS is a gritty sci-fi/action story about Aaron, a former super-soldier afflicted with chronic asthma, who is cast out of the covert government program that created him. Armed with his specialized Battlehaler, Aaron takes to the streets as a vigilante, seeking redemption. His quest for reinstatement leads him to uncover a deep-rooted conspiracy that threatens to unravel the very fabric of his society.

Get ready for the next dope sci-fi story from Stone Harbor Comics, OUTCASTS, a gritty action series that’s all about knowing your worth. Meet Aaron, a former super-soldier and candidate of the Pinnacle Task Force, who, despite being their best, was cast out due to the development of his “imperfection” – chronic asthma, a side effect of the very procedure meant to enhance him. Never accepting his fate, Aaron becomes a vigilante with the aid of his high-tech Battlehaler, half staff, half inhaler. He now takes on the city’s worst by night while pretending to be just another office drone by day. But when a sinister plot surfaces, involving military-grade weapons and a vengeful inventor set on chaos, Aaron and his estranged friend Imara are thrust into an alliance to save the city he swore to protect.

Growing up with asthma, this project holds a special place in my heart. I was never a fan of the stereotypical representation of people who have asthma in storytelling. We’re always the nerdy, weak kid who can’t take the pressure. My goal is to help flip that depiction completely on its head. That’s why OUTCASTS isn’t just another comic book to me. It’s a story about not giving up, about fighting for your place in the world, even when the world doesn’t want to give you one.

This campaign is geared towards completing the first chapter in the series, which is an introduction to Aaron and his vigilantism on full display. It’s a blended style between Manga and Western comics with its black and white pages and splashes of color for heightened moments. With your help, we can bring this epic tale to life. We’re talking big battles, heart-stopping moments, and a story that’ll stick with you long after you’re done. But we need your support to make it happen. This is your chance to jump on board with something special, to help us shake up the sci-fi scene with a story about beating the odds and finding your purpose against all obstacles.

Let’s make OUTCASTS happen together. Chip in, spread the word, and let’s show everyone that anyone can don the cape, asthma and all!

A Good Sport

by Soizick Jaffre

A Good Sport is a graphic memoir from French cartoonist Soizick Jaffre.

Current Funding: $1,782
Funding Goal: $6,000
Days Left: 4
Link: A Good Sport

A Good Sport is a graphic memoir written and drawn by French cartoonist Soizick Jaffre, detailing her participation in the 2018 Gay Games, her lifelong love of athletics, and her own personal search for freedom. This memoir is visually rich with Jaffre’s colorful, expressive illustration style that runs the gamut from realistic portrayal to eye-popping surrealism. A Good Sport deftly balances both personal and world history to paint a picture of feminist triumph and queer self-determination.

Jaffre’s journey takes her from the beaches of France to the streets of Saigon, from the cafes of Tel Aviv to the bowling alleys of America. Along the way we learn some of the history of the Gay Games and their origins in Olympian Tom Waddell’s fight against discrimination. We also see how the Games provide a gathering point for a world of queer athletes whose drive to compete is also an expression of their personal struggles for equal rights in their home countries. Throughout A Good Sport, Jaffre makes the connection between one’s right to participate in a chosen sport and the “game of freedom” that we all must play to become our best selves.

A Good Sport is a full-color trade paperback over 150 pages in length, published by award-winning imprint Stacked Deck Press. It features an introduction by cartoonist and comics scholar Justin Hall and a foreword by Gay Games organizer Pascale Reinteau. A Good Sport has something to inspire, inform, and delight readers from all walks of life.

? Prefer to keep your porn classy?

Then have we got a comic book for you!

Death’s Kiss will make you swoon, sigh, and cry out with pleasure. This robust and beautiful story penned by a New York Times and multiple USA Today bestselling author working under a pseudonym has been brought to life scene-by-scene in this special edition with gorgeous drawings from a top artist.

The best part? These books are 100% complete and ready to print once the campaign is over.

Death’s Kiss is filled with reapers, psychopomps (mythological creatures who escort newly deceased souls to the afterlife), and other unseen supernatural beings that shift seamlessly between this reality and the next.

They have evolved with the changing world, becoming something beyond human lore. As servants of Death, they are bound to the shadows, unseen by the living and forbidden from lingering or forming attachments, especially with mortals.

It is within this world that our lovers somehow, impossibly, find one another, blurring the lines between life and death, challenging the very rules of existence, and rewriting the destinies of any who dare to love?.

***The comic is available in ENGLISH and in FRENCH and so are SK Prince’s books. You will be allowed to choose language when you fill out your survey.

La bande dessinée est disponible en ANGLAIS et en FRANÇAIS, tout comme les livres de SK Prince. Vous serez autorisé à choisir la langue lorsque vous remplirez votre sondage de Kickstarter. ****

Gunpunch! A new graphic novel from Fernando Pinto

Who knew being a superhero could suck this much?

Current Funding: $5,080
Funding Goal: $3,000
Days Left: 10
Link: Gunpunch! A new graphic novel from Fernando Pinto

Hi Everyone! Fernando Pinto here. I’m the creator of Gunpunch, and I’m super excited to welcome you to our campaign.

My favorite comics and cartoons have always been the odd chapters.

Remember that episode of Dragon Ball Z where Goku takes his driving test? Or that issue of Hitman where he meets Superman and they talk about life (Right before Hitman goes back to killing people). When the fantastic meets the ordinary, and the absurdity of both gets called on and expounded to fun (And sometimes hilarious) results.

That’s where this book lives. A story of a regular man who after having the worst day of his life hooks up with a mysterious girl and now has superpowers well beyond his wildest dreams. Thing is, being a superhero when you’re not that good at it, kinda sucks. Especially when your paycheck is proportional to how many evil aliens you can dispose of in a week. And you thought making this month’s rent was hard before.

I first came up with the idea for this comic when I was around 13 years old. The idea of Alien Races coming to earth and a regular guy having to deal with all of this just seemed so interesting to me at the time. Then in adulthood, I realized that no matter what’s going on in the world you still have to go to work and pay your rent. Mix that up with our reactions to social media, a healthy serving of humor and cursing, and you get GUNPUNCH.

Evan had an alright life. A job he didn’t mind. And a long-distance girlfriend he was pretty fond of. “Had” being the operative word here.

Now, after losing his job and his girl on the same day, a chance hookup with a mysterious girl turns him into GUNPUNCH, Earth’s last hope against the invasion the evil shape-shifting Draxans are plotting on our planet.

Or at least that’s what he believes.

Also, it sounds way more glamorous than it actually is.

To be honest, Evan is not that psyched about it. But at least his recruiters, the United Planets Coalition, pay alright. Kinda. Look, he really needs a gig.

Armed with a high-tech symbiotic armor grafted onto his body, Evan will try to eliminate all Draxans in his path, before they can take over every human being’s body on this planet and complete their invasion.

His sister D, the alien holo-construct Nell, Bob the criminal, Dee’s friend Stace, and a few more “colorful” characters will be along for the ride helping Evan out. Not that he asked any of them, but you know, they’re kind of around I guess.

Through all of it, Evan will have to deal with the city’s reaction to their new hero, the huge expectations of this new mission, his old boss Alice Magnus, and with the fact that maaaaaaybe they didn’t really tell him the whole truth when they picked him for the job.

He will also get beat up. A lot.

This book also started in its current incarnation as a webcomic during the pandemic, when just focusing on creating, writing, coloring and lettering brought me joy in a time of uncertainty. I hope when you read it, it can do the same for you as we keep diving further and further into the craziness of modern life.

The book itself is about halfway done. I’m inking the last chapter, and then it’s off to color and lettering
