Krowdfunder Korner For April 15, 2023

Kickstarter isn’t the only place indie creators go to fund their projects, and we here at Comic Watch want to highlight and support those projects across the various platforms.

We especially want to spotlight those projects that still need a push along with those stretch goals.

Below is a brief synopsis of the project; for more details and to support the projects, click on the link to the campaign page.

Previously featured campaigns still running:

Resolution

by Ron Marz, Andy Lanning, Rick Leonardi and Netho Diaz

Current Funding:  $23,868
Funding Goal: $18.o00
Days Left:  10
Link: Resolution

***UPDATE APRIL ’23: The book is in the final stages of lettering and will be ready for print this month! Due to the delays and how long it’s taken for the book to be completed, we’re re-opening the campaign for 2 weeks for anyone who missed the original campaign, and for retailers to hop on with the knowledge that the wait time is significantly decreased.

A legendary member of an outer-space corps of heroes has withdrawn to a remote world in solitude. But her past catches up to her as former comrades arrive to convince her to come back and bring a former arch-nemesis to justice.

RESOLUTION is an epic new tale by the masters of cosmic storytelling, presented as an oversized hardcover graphic novel. It is written by Ron Marz and Andy Lanning, who’s also handling inking duties for the project. Originally slated for Rick Leonardi on pencils, changes occurred that took him off the project, but not before he provided the main cover artwork, character and world designs and a few interior spreads for the book. Fortunately, Marz and Lanning were able to recruit rising superstar Netho Diaz to take over the remaining art duties, and enlisted Paul Pelletier, Bart Sears and Tom Raney to handle bonus stories and flashbacks.

Also includes pin-ups by Liam Sharp, Phil Jimenez, Greg Broadmore, Wes Craig, Paul Pelletier, Ron Lim, Bart Sears, Luke Ross, Jeff Johnson and others.

Won’t Back Down Anthology by Trina Robbins + Various

Comics legend Trina Robbins is fighting the rogue Supreme Court with over 30 storytellers from all around the world to publish a pro-choice anthology.

Current Funding:  $4,797
Funding Goal: $8.500
Days Left: 16
Link: Won’t Back Down Anthology

In 1973, the Supreme Court gave women the right to make decisions over the care of their own bodies. A mere fifty years later, a rogue Supreme Court has taken that right away. Today, over 32 states have banned or severely restricted abortion. We’re fighting back as best we can, with pens and brushes, paper and ink, to produce a pro-choice anthology, Won’t Back Down, featuring the work of over 30 artists, writers, inkers, and colorists, and we’re giving the profits to Planned Parenthood. We need $8,500 dollars to pay for printing and related costs.

Miscarry by Lee Marrs / A Lonely Childhood by Grace Gordon, Joelle Barreto, Grace Desmarais, and Isabell Struble

Forced Birth Nation by Eve Furchgott / Careless Love: UnWanted Pregnancy in Folk Song by Sharon Rudahl

With Won’t Back Down, Trina Robbins has created an important anthology that celebrates women who fight for justice. This is an essential crowdfunding project for anyone interested in women’s rights, free speech, or simply great comics.

Proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood.

Enough Dough to Buy More Bullets / Space Nazis on the Moon

Two pals drink, smoke, and shoot their way through this all-gas, no-brakes 52-page flip book love letter to mid-century

Current Funding:  $2,865
Funding Goal: $5,000
Days Left: 13
Link: Enough Dough to Buy More Bullets / Space Nazis on the Moon by John Pence & Maxim Mel (@UHStudios, @johnnypence)

Two pals drink, smoke, and shoot their way through this all-gas, no-brakes 52-page flipbook love letter to mid-century pulp.

Sunday funny-paper luminaries Wil Eisner, Hal Foster, Segar, and Milt Caniff are, no doubt, spinning in their graves over this two-volume tribute to and send-up of their craft. Originally published as a biweekly serial exclusive on GlobalComix, The Jonesey and Doctor Long Adventures are lovingly concocted by American madman John Pence and Russian madman Maxim Mel to achieve the same breakneck pace of old newspaper funnies, but also metered out in small doses. And, like in the work of the old masters, alcohol, tobacco, and firearms are employed liberally. Unlike in the masterpieces, nothing is serious; nothing is sacred. Two story arcs are collected in this Complete Retro Reversible Val-U Pack, because if ever there was a book that should be flipped upside down when you want to read the other half, it’s this one.

Stephan Franck’s PALOMINO Volumes 2 & 3

The Critically-Acclaimed Neo-Noir Graphic Novel Set In LA’s Country Music Clubs Continues

Current Funding:  $13,253
Funding Goal: $15,000
Days Left: 19
Link:Palomino Volumes 2 & 3  byStephan Franck (@fromdarkplanet, @stephan_franck)

Acclaimed cartoonist and award-nominated animator, writer, and director Stephan Franck has worked with some of the most popular characters of all time—including Spider-Man and the Smurfs — and has contributed to classic contemporary animation projects, including Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, The Iron Giant, and Marvel Studios’ What If…? as head of animation and director. This spring, the LA-based creator is returning to a passion project: writing and drawing the graphic novel series Palomino, a neo-noir graphic novel series set in the lost culture of Los Angeles’ country music clubs. Franck and his company, Dark Planet Comics, are returning to Kickstarter to crowdfund volumes 2 and 3 of the planned 4-volume graphic novel series.

Set in Los Angeles in the year 1981, Palomino is perfect for fans of mysteries, hard boiled dialogue, music, lived-in slice-of-life, and Los Angeles’ weird and forgotten history. The American Century is running on fumes, but the end isn’t anywhere in sight. The cowboy is still America’s most central symbol—and from movies, to music, to the President himself, it all hails from Southern California. Across LA, six nights a week, working musicians, TV actors, stuntmen, cops, hustlers, and broken souls all play their part in the cultural myth making. Most of them are just trying to survive—on the B-side of the City of Angels. This is Palomino — where Farrah Fawcett hair reigns supreme, where Ronald Reagan is beginning his first term as President, and where LA’s hottest music spot is North Hollywood’s historic Palomino Club.

Funding Goal: $500
Days Left: 14
Link: Detached Volume 1 by Angela Oddling (@angelaoddling)

A comic about learning to love yourself.

After Casey’s personal demons manifest in the real world as creatures called Oddlings, she must learn to embrace and love herself or risk spiraling back into the captivity of her troubled past. The first book of Detached introduces our protagonist Casey a year after her suicide attempt. After being saved by a mysterious creature, she’s thrown back into her life and faced with the things she had been trying to escape. Casey must navigate a world that’s now sprinkled with strange creatures and unpredictable magic while trying to heal the heart-shaped hole left in her body. Volume One sets the pace for Casey’s slow-burning (and awkward) journey as she learns that she’s worthy of love from both herself and her friends and that her past does not define her.

The Fujoshi Guide to Web Development

Days Left: 16
Link: The Fujoshi Guide to Web Developmentby Essential Randomness (@essentialrandom, @BobaBoard)

Help us put the means of website production back into the hands of those best suited to receive them: fandom people.

The web is not what it used to be. That vibrant place of weirdness which accompanied our childhoods has given way to sanitized, closed-down corporate platforms. Many words have been written bemoaning the change, yet solutions are still lacking: Does a thriving web need a permanent ledger to save commercial transactions on? Not really. Open protocols to share content beyond the boundaries of capitalist walled gardens? Most likely. Tools to build online spaces aligned with the goals of the communities that inhabit them? Very much so. But despite all the people working tirelessly to solve this problem, the unfortunate reality is that no one has given the internet what it really, truly needs to return to its glory days… Until now.

The first 2 issues of new post-apocalyptic story. What does it mean to be human in a world that left humanity behind long ago?

Toxx is a five issue post-apocolyptic miniseries filled with action, intrigue, and drama. It’s a story about personal responsibility, hope for the future, and what it truly means to be human. During the recent pandemic, I went through the surreal experience of bringing a child into the world — an experience both beautiful and terrorizing.  My wife and I felt helpless to the panic of the world, cut off from our families, and fearful of the world our child would inherit. That life-altering experience inspired me to create the story Toxx — where the world is an actual dystopian wasteland — where the sun itself is poisoning the world with radiation and humanity has long since been sterilized.

Tuned: A blood-soaked psychological horror graphic novel!

A Neil Gibson Comic

Current Funding:  $5,204
Funding Goal: $3,762
Days Left: 14
Link: Tuned by Neil Gibson (@TPubComics, @TwistedNeil, @aymen_swisy)

A blood-soaked psychological horror graphic novel

Tuned is Hostel meets John Wick by way of Old Boy. Horror and gore fans will not be disappointed. Tuned is our darkest and most violent comic to date. Those who back the Kickstarter should expect an absolutely twisted blood soaked ride. People Change. It’s natural. But some change is decidedly… unnatural. Project Coventry was meant to change people for the better, but it ended in tragedy. The project was shut down and everyone moved on.

Except Frank Scalera.
