Depths

Current Funding: $4,947
Funding Goal: $15,000
Days Left: 18
Link: Depths
Ever felt so low you weren’t sure you could keep going? Like the world was collapsing around you and just surviving until tomorrow was a monumental task? Have you ever felt like you were drowning?
Emil Parker is a brilliant engineer, a 1930s Oxford Scholar, and his latest creation is going to change the way we explore the ocean. A perpetual diving suit capable of sustaining someone underwater indefinitely, it’s nothing short of a miracle of modern technology. Emil pilots the suit in its first outing to the public and promises to stay underwater for a full day–but during the expedition, something grabs a hold of Emil and drags him to the bottom of the Ocean.
Alone and forsaken, Emil spends the next three years trying to get back to the surface battling the elements, sea monsters of legend, and his own inner demons. Meanwhile, on the surface, his best friend James Harrigan is on a wild goose chase trying to find Emil, presumed dead since the day he was dragged to the depths. It’s a harrowing story of survival, guilt, and redemption that reads like The Martian meets 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. With your help, we can create the most important book of our careers!
Depths: Book One is a 112-page graphic novel about grief, depression, and the strength it takes to carry on. It’s a story about overcoming impossible odds when even taking a single step seems overwhelming. It’s the story that made us want to make comics.

John Benteen’s Fargo: Hell on Wheels graphic novel – adapted by Howard Chaykin

A 96+ page prestige format, action-packed, hardcover graphic novel starring soldier of fortune Neal Fargo, based on the legendary ‘Fargo’ paperback series by John Benteen!

Current Funding: $49,389
Funding Goal: $60,000
Days Left: 6
Link: John Benteen’s Fargo: Hell on Wheels graphic novel
In Hell on Wheels, Fargo is hired to protect a small railroad under relentless attack from a corrupt and ruthless competitor with money to burn, and hired guns to do the burning. Fargo is a man ready for any challenge, and for this hardboiled soldier of fortune, payback is fair game. Packed with fist fighting brawls, gunplay, women and whiskey from running start to stunning finish, this story is the perfect example of why Neal Fargo is a timeless character in the timeless world of adventure fiction, and perfect for the modern graphic novel. Combine that with the unique creative sensibility of Howard Chaykin, no stranger to tough, smart protagonists (with an eye for the ladies) and Fargo: Hell on Wheels will be one of the most exciting independent graphic novels of the year
Fargo has been described as “a combination of Robert E. Howard’s Conan mixed with Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch.” He was a big man with wide shoulders, narrow hips and the long legs of a born and bred horseman. His hair was close-cropped and snow white, though he was only in his thirties. He had grown up hard and never looked back. He’d punched cattle, rough-necked in the oil fields—even fought in the prize rings. He joined up with Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and found his true calling—combat. His face was so battered, scarred, weathered and remarkably ugly that it was almost handsome. He drew helplessly admiring looks from the women and cautious, wary looks from the men. He was a soldier of fortune, for sale to the highest bidder—he was Fargo
This campaign is for a 96+ page prestige format hardcover graphic novel adaptation of one of Howard Chaykin’s favorite characters from the highwater era of paperback adventure heroes of the sixties and seventies. Chaykin writes and draws the entire book, along with the extraordinary colorist Yen Nitro and of course his longtime letterer/designer, Ken Bruzenak

Let Her Be Evil

A celebration of unapologetically wicked women with cruel intentions—of the nasty, the vile, the rage-fueled mistresses who know exactly what they want and aren’t afraid to get it by any means necessary.

Current Funding: $19,149
Funding Goal: $10,000
Days Left: 5
Link: Let Her Be Evil
A 128-page softcover anthology spotlights seventeen short-story comics of women who do necessary or unnecessary evil, who are ten steps ahead of the self-righteous hero, or who have completely lost the plot; who are ugly and disgusting and wrathful. Author Gillian Flynn put it best when she wrote, “I mourn the lack of female villains—good potent female villains…I’m talking violent, wicked women…Dark sides are important. They should be nurtured like nasty black orchids.” The goal of this anthology is to provide the same narrative space villainess’ male counterpoints enjoy in movies, books, and comics without being explained away by child loss or sexual assault, and to free them of the preconceived notion they should be morally punished for their deeds while we allow male villains to be evil without comment. LET HER BE EVIL matters because women deserve equal representation when it comes to agency in their stories—whether their actions be morally good, gray, or pitch black.

Lost Children of Andromeda: The Arrival

The awakening of humanity begins…just as the world starts to end

Current Funding: $4,478
Funding Goal: $5,000
Days Left: 12
Link: Lost Children of Andromeda: The Arrival

The year is 2040…Twelve years before the projected apocalypse. A team of scientists contracted by the military known as The Andromeda Project are tracking the arrival of an alien energy from another galaxy. Lead on that project are two rivals, Captain Nicolas Delemar and Professor Patrick Adams. No one knows how the energy will arrive and what damage it could do to the planet, so Patrick has worked diligently to create protection mechanisms at the projected site of the landing, Cumberland Falls, Kentucky.

Allister Adams, a boy with the curiosity and fear of any seven-year old, has accompanied his dad, Patrick, to his workplace at Andromeda Power, the nearby plant. In this story, we are plunged into the lingering aftermath of a severe thunderstorm. We feel a young boy’s angst and a protective parent’s uncertainty in lines like, “Storms aren’t meant to hurt us. That’s just Mother Nature telling us how she feels.” But the violence in the sky feels anything but natural. Something is coming that will change Earth forever. Could it be the beginning of the end?

It soon becomes clear that courage will be the only light that can lead Allister and his dad. And even that may not be enough to survive

Already a successful sci-fi book series, The Arrival is the first official comic book from the Lost Children of Andromeda universe. This story follows Allister Adams, the main character of the LCOA series, as we learn the origins of his abilities and the apocalypse. A catastrophic superstorm threatens the unsuspecting citizens of Cumberland Falls, sending Allister and his father Patrick on the run in hopes of survival.

One comic a year. Every year. For 13 years.

So Buttons is an anthology of fun, heartwarming, true stories. One life (mine!) interpreted by many amazing artists

My life is a life surrounded by comix, celebrity and coincidence and So Buttons collects it all in one lovely package.

I’ve been making fun, true, collaborative comix for over 10 years. I love working with so many great artists and I love PAYING them. Nothing is for exposure here, except my soul. I do a book a year, every year. And you can buy them all here!

This issue is subtitled: Film School with Pekar’s Pals and Mine

If you don’t know, Harvey Pekar was a guy who wrote auto-bio comics and hired different artists to interpret his stories. I follow that model.

So… the inspiration for that subtitle is this. Last year, I met Joe Zabel, a longtime collaborator of Harvey Pekar’s. I showed him my work and he agreed to do a story with me. And then he introduced me to Gary Dumm, and even longer collabber with Pekar. HE agreed to do a story. And then he introduced me to other co-conspirators Michael T. Gilbert and Brian Bram (not seen since American Splendor #2, 1977)!

The characters in this comic were created by real life best friends, Derek Jason Bush and John Fletcher Pasquini, way back in 1987 when Derek was a freshman in high school and John was a senior. It took this long for the characters to be fully realized and now, with your help, these amazing characters can finally see the light of day in a fully colored 36-page printed comic book.
This first issue of a planned five-issue series introduces the reader to two new superheroes who are best friends that fight crime together.  At least…according to ONE of them. The story begins with Packrat, a relative newcomer to the superhero community, enjoying the act of defending the city against crime and battling a group of masked thugs. Then Thunderbunny arrives on the scene forever changing Packrat’s established world order. Despite Thunderbunny’s insistence that they are in fact “best buddies” who even fought together on the Moon, Packrat has no idea who this strange man in a pink bunny suit is, and he’s positive he’s NEVER been to the Moon!

Link: The Tomb of Baalberith V2

Mark McKenna here, you may know me from the 38+ years of comic creating and 1,000+ comics I’ve worked on for Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse. Six years ago, I launched an art studio called Virtual Inks Inc (VII) as a way to collaborate with up and coming comic book artists and writers to explore fun, new stories. The first product of VII was The Tomb of Baalberith, a collection of short horror stories centered around three terrifying monsters that wreak havoc in the name of their demon overlord, Baalberith. I came up with the idea originally as a homage to the old EC comics titles, Vault of Horror and Tales from the CryptBaalberith has developed some of its own unique roots stemming from those beloved horror stories. It’s now six years later and I’m collaborating with a whole new crew of talent to create The Tomb of Baalberith V2!

The Tomb of Baalberith V2 introduces some of the most vile horror creations that I’ve ever had the (un)fortunate displeasure to make acquaintances with. I’ve decided to reduce the length of the comic book from 48 to 32 glorious black & white pages, but they are as gruesome and eye-popping as ever!
