Image Comics revealed the upcoming return of The Department of Truth with a first look at June’s issue #23. The issue sees writer James Tynion IV and artist Martin Simmonds reteaming to continue the story as the titular department adjusts to being in the public and grappling with the secrets of John F Kennedy’s assassination on the grassy knolls.
In the press release, Tynion IV discussed tackling the historic event, stating:
“Online and at conventions, more than any other question, Martin and I have heard readers patiently asking—‘When is The Department of Truth coming back?’ And we’re very, very excited to answer: now. There has never been a more prudent time to turn over the grimy stones of the American bedrock and shine a light on what’s crawling beneath in the dark. And since our first issue, the very darkest mysteries have seemed to zero in around Lee Harvey Oswald and one fateful day in Dealey Plaza in 1963. These next issues of The Department of Truth will answer once and for all: who really shot JFK?”
The issue comes right after the writing/artist duo finished their adaptation of Dracula, pulling from the continuity of the Universal Monster movies. Now that the series has wrapped, the duo are working their way to a milestone 25th issue for The Department of Truth.
Simmonds spoke about working to the Milestone, stating:
“Returning to The Department of Truth after hiatus has been a real thrill for us, and we are very excited to share the next part of the story with you. ‘It’s important that you see…’”
