As a new year, and the new Ultimate Universe, swing closer to shelves, Marvel has revealed a bit more about the upcoming Spidey status quo and promo art for them. This January, Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto are set to relaunch Ultimate Spider-Man and will do so with a few major twists.
- Peter Parker was bit by the spider containing his powers later in life, well into adulthood.
- Peter and Mary Jane Watson are married, and already have two children when Spider-Man comes onto the scene.
In the press release from Marvel, writer Jonathan Hickman described taking this new approach to the icon mythos:
“When we decided that we were going to do a book about an older Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man, we really wanted to lean into him starting his super hero life from a very different place than what’s traditionally expected. Peter and MJ being married is one of many decisions we made that underline this being quite a ‘different’ kind of Spider-man story.”
Artist Elizabeth Torque is slated to illustrate variant covers for the book’s first four issues, all depicting key images of the married couple. That cover, oozing with pure romance and bit of fun, can be seen below, along with a promo piece drawn by Ryan Stegman:
