Mad Magazine Cartoonist Al Jaffee Passes Away At 102 Years Of Age

Al Jaffee, the cartoonist responsible for creating the illustration-with-text feature for Mad Magazine, passed on Monday, April 10, 2023, in the hospital from multiple organ failure at the age of 102.

In 1964, Jaffee’s first Mad Magazine Fold-In debuted ( a satirization of the news that Elizabeth Taylor was dumping her husband, Eddie Fisher, for Richard Burton, her Cleopatra co-star ), a feature that he did for 55 years and would become a defining feature of the publication taking on the Beatles to TMZ with his broad visual style, which were collected in a four-volume box set in 2011.

Throughout his 77-year career, Jaffee worked for Stan Lee and the New York Herald Tribune before landing at Mad Magazine and received numerous awards, including induction into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2013 and holding the Guinness World Record for the longest cartooning career.
