Marvel’s first superhero movie featuring an Asian lead, ‘Shang-Chi’, is apparently being fast-tracked as the franchise seeks to expand its roster of characters.
‘Shang-Chi’ will be penned by Chinese-American screenwriter Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984), but Marvel is still seeking an Asian or Asian-American director to lead the project. There is no word yet on potential casting decisions or release date for the film.
Shang-Chi first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #5 in 1973, but the title was quickly changed to The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu where the character would see enduring popularity. Shang-Chi doesn’t necessarily have any outstanding powers such as what we see in Marvel’s upcoming Captain Marvel, so it will undoubtedly be an interesting change of pace for the franchise.
