Marvel Reveals a New Pantheon in the Lead Up to G.O.D.S

New details have emerged about Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti’s next Marvel epic, G.O.D.S. The series which has been described as Marvel’s answer to Sandman, was announced last year with sparse details beyond the creative team. This month’s Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/X-Men #1 shared a first look at the series, introducing one of the book’s leads Wyn, discussing morality with Doctor Strange.

The book is set to redefine the cosmology and hierarchy of gods while exploring the fundamental forces of science and sorcery across the Marvel Universe. All of this conflict is done behind the scenes of the Marvel publishing line, with a few intersections with the superhero community being teased. The concept and teases feels in line with the Hickman’s early work at Marvel, like Secret Warriors and S.H.I.E.L.D.

“When I came back to Marvel a few years ago, I wrote two series bibles. The first was House of X and the other one was G.O.D.S.,” Hickman explained. “To say that I’m excited to finally be able to share this story with everyone is a massive understatement. G.O.D.S. takes place in its own special corner of the Marvel Universe — in the cracks that lie at the intersection of science and magic — and revisits some characters and concepts that we’ve reimagined for a more modern, continuity-driven audience.”

Now, Marvel has released the roster of characters to go along with a series of variants announced for the series. In each book with one of these variants, a one-page back-up story from Hickman will show interactions between these new characters and the staples of the Marvel Universe. The press releases also revealed that some of these characters will make an appearance at this year’s Hellfire Gala, to watch as the mutant’s enter the Fall of X era.
