NEWS WATCH: Netflix Opens The Door to New Show “LOCKE & KEY”

Netflix no longer keeps new show details under “LOCKE & KEY” with announcement of Showrunner and Writer.

The beloved and personal favorite IDW comic “Locke & Key” has finally gotten a show and it’s on Netflix. After 8 years of being shopped around from network to network with Hulu passing on a pilot, the comic turned show has found a home at Netflix who has officially order 10 episodes and named Meredith Averill known from The Good Wife as co-showrunner alongside Carlton Cuse and Aron Eli Coleite from ABC’s The River, NBC’s Heroes and Fox’s Party of Five, as executive producer and writer.

Locke & Key is a horror- fantasy comic from IDW that started in 2008 written by Joe Hill, also known by his birth name Joseph Hillstrom King the son of acclaimed horror writer Stephen King, and artist Gabriel Rodriguez that is about a family that after the gruesome murder of their father, the Locke kids, Tyler, Kinsey and Bode move with their mother Nina across the country to their ancestral family home “Keyhouse” in Maine and begin discovering its secrets through magical keys that give them an array of powers. Little do they know that a diabolical demon also wants the keys and will stop at nothing to attain them and its freedom.

Aaron Eli Coleite has done a rewrite on the pilot episode alongside comic creator Joe Hill in place of the Hulu pilot take was originally penned by Hill and Cuse. A new director will soon be announced to replace Andy Muschietti. Muschietti ironically busy working on a movie, It 2, that’s base on a book written by Hill’s father Stephen King and was no longer available to direct the Netflix show. He and sister Barbara Muschietti will still be credited as executive producers on the show. The Netflix series will be entirely recast. Showrunner Averill and Cuse of the series that was created, written and executive produced by Hill, will get a “series developed by” credit alongside Averill on the Netflix version.

The horror thriller show has had quite the sojourn, originally developed for television at Fox, which went to pilot from Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) during the 2010-11 broadcast season and debuted at that year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The project, from executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Steven Spielberg, and starring Mark Pellegrino, Miranda Otto, Jesse McCartney, Sarah Bolger and Nick Stahl, did not go anywhere. Universal then grabbed the rights to the comic with Kurtzman and Orsi attached to produce a feature adaptation, which also went nowhere. It’s not until May 2016 that then IDW Entertainment CEO David Adams and president Ted Ozer teamed with Circle of Confusion from The Walking Dead took a second stab at it. The effort was shopped around and landed at Hulu with another pilot order in April 2017, with the streamer edging outlets including Netflix, HBO, and FX for the project from showrunner Cuse and with Hill attached to pen the script.

Thank to Netflix and IDW’s David Ozer, Ted Adams, who will still be credited as an executive producer though he recently took a sabbatical from IDW and has been replaced by Kerry Mcluggage as new acting CEO, with Cuse’s Genre Arts producing partner Lindsey Springer, Coleite, the Muschiettis and Circle of Confusion’s David Alpert and Rick Jacobs who will also exec produce the “Locke & Key” show looks like it has finally found a home.
