Perhaps one of the less surprising announcements for the upcoming 2019-2020 television season was that Arrow was going to end after a shortened eighth season. There were some hints that the end was nigh – certain off-screen deals Oliver Queen made in last fall’s Elseworlds crossover; the fact that the upcoming Batwoman series can be seen as the beginning of phase two of the CW’s DC TV universe. (After all, can it still be called the Arrowverse if Arrow is no longer airing?) For certain shows to continue, the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths event would have to play out differently than it does in the comics, after all, or else we’d end up without a Flash or a Supergirl.
But that’s a digression. In a shocking, surprising turn of events, Emily Bett Rickards made a poignant post on her Instagram, announcing that she wouldn’t be part of Arrow season 8.
The time has come to talk of many memes. Of bows and arrows and superheroes and Olicity and Queens
And why TGA is so damn hot
And yes, canaries need more scenes… But wait just one minute
before we go and do all that
For this makes me out of breath
To have this not small chat
Felicity and I
are a very tight two
But after one through seven
we will be saying goodbye to you
I thank you all for the time we’ve shared
The elevators we have climbed
The monsters we have faced and scared
And The burgers we have dined
I will keep her in my heart for always
And I hope that you can too
Because she would not be alive if it weren’t for all of you ?
Felicity and Me
Originally a minor supporting character from the Firestorm series at DC Comics, Felicity Smoak was intended to be a one-off character in the first season of Arrow, until fans and writers noticed the undeniable chemistry that existed between Felicity and the rest of the cast. This soon led to Felicity replacing Laurel Lance as the de facto female lead of Arrow, and to Felicity becoming a fan favorite character – one whose profile was raised in the comics as well. Some lines in Rickards’ post hint that possibly some things may be coming up that brings one of the Canaries more into the spotlight, which could mean some sort of endgame where Ollie could end up with Dinah Drake or Laurel before the series ends. As Felicity is in the future-flashes this season, there’s a strong possibility that she’s not dying at the end of the season, but with a Crisis looming, well. The future is uncertain.
