NEWS WATCH: Before The Bat There Was The Butler, Pennyworth The Show.

Learn the story of Alfred Pennyworth the man who raised the Batman in Epix’s new series Pennyworth.

Announced back in May of this year Epix a premiere cable network will be creating a series from the Batman family called Pennyworth. The series will have a 10-episode first season and will not be connected, in any way, to Gotham other then Bruno Heller as writer of the pilot and will executive produce the series with Danny Cannon, who directed the pilot of Gotham way back in 2014 for the Fox network and will be doing the same for Pennyworth.

The show will be set in 1960s England and follow Alfred Pennyworth, a baby-faced former British special forces operative who starts his own security company and winds up working with a young billionaire known as Thomas Wayne. Pennyworth will draw heavily on Alfred’s (canonical) history as a agent of the S.A.S., the British secret forces. Hopefully we might also learn about his skills as a army medic, mechanical engineer, and a Shakespearean actor who has mastered the art of disguise and throwing voices.

Not much was known about the show until this week when the up and coming series cast Jack Bannon (The Imitation Game) as Alfred Pennyworth who fits the official description of the character Alfred “Alfred Pennyworth is a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty; you’d never take him for a SAS killer.”

This news was followed up with the casting of Thomas Wayne who will be played by Ben Aldridge (Reign) who also fits his character description quite well as a “young, fresh-faced billionaire hailing from the East Coast of the United States. Confident and extremely disciplined, this young aristocrat meets an unlikely business partner in Alfred Pennyworth.”

With such a prestigious pedigree helming this series I have nothing but the highest hopes for this new show on Epix. Filming is said to start in Warner Bros.’ Leavesden studios on Oct. 22.
