The film adaptation of the popular video game series Borderlands has landed actress Cate Blanchett for the lead roll in the upcoming Lionsgate Films production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film directed by Eli Roth is the latest video-game adaptation in the line which includes Mortal Kombat, The Angry Birds Movie, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The film reunites Blanchett with Roth following her appearance in 2018’s The House With a Clock in Its Walls with Jack Black. Blanchett (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Thor: Ragnarok) who has won Oscars for performances in The Aviator and Blue Jasmine will play Lilith, a siren and legendary thief equipped with magical skills.
Fans of the Borderlands franchise know that Lilith is one of the original game’s four playable characters, and made frequent return visits to the series as an NPC in the sequel Borderlands 2, the Pre-Sequel, and Borderlands 3.
Eli Roth will be directing the Borderlands movie from a script by Craig Mazin (creator of TV series Chernobyl), with Avi Arad and Ari Arad producing alongside Erik Feig.
In addition to Borderlands, Blanchett is also set to star in James Gray’s upcoming Armageddon Times and Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up.
