NEWS WATCH: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Who Played Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange, to Return for Sequel

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange, confirms return for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

As Marvel Studios works on finishing the first few projects of the MCU Phase 4 films, some exciting news concerning one of the characters who made a cameo appearance in the first Doctor Strange has been announced.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, at first rumored to be a horror-style film, has undergone many changes since it was first announced in 2019.  The film initially was to be directed by  Scott Derrickson and scheduled for a summer 2021 release date, but Derrickson left the project and was replaced by Sam Raimi. This, along with the COVID-19 pandemic, left the movie and  MCU fans without much good news about the project, until today.

In an interview with ScreenRant, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange, revealed that he would be returning for the sequel and a bit about when production will begin, saying,

We’re hoping to start pretty soon is what I can tell you. So, you know, as soon as possible. We’re all really excited to get going and to get cracking with it. I can’t wait.

With the confirmation that he is set to return as Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange 2, Ejiofor joins the shortlist of already announced cast members.  As expected, Benedict Cumberbatch will return to star as Doctor Strange in the sequel and will be joined by Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).  Ejiofor joins Benedict Wong and Cumberbatch as the only stars from the first film returning, as Rachel McAdams will not be reprising her role as Christine Adams. Among the other characters rumored to appear in Doctor Strange 2, magic users Clea and Brother Voodoo, along with the longshot of America Chavez making her MCU debut as part of the film’s multiverse storyline, have been heard through the rumor mill.

The news of Ejiofor’s return is welcomed news without question, but his optimism that production will begin soon is also great news as the film was originally scheduled to start filming in June. Marvel appears to be in no hurry to rush Doctor Strange 2 into production at this point as the cases of the coronavirus continuing to rise.

Whenever filming does begin on Doctor Strange:  Multiverse of Madness, fans now have a small insight into the direction that the movie will go.
