To honor the recent passing of legendary creator Denny O’Neil, DC Comics is offering one of his most iconic stories, Green Lantern #76, as a free digital download.
Green Lantern #76, which kicked off the seminal Green Lantern/Green Arrow era, known as the ‘Hard Traveling Heroes’ story arc published initially in 1970. O’Neil’s story, illustrated by Neal Adams, is considered by comic historians as the starting point for darker, more realistic comics that began the Bronze Age of comics.
The issue is best known for the series of panels which contain a simple exchange between Green Lantern(Hal Jordan), a human who was drafted into an intergalactic police force and a member of the Justice League, and his accuser, an old black man. In these three panels, O’Neil and Adams encapsulated the societal issues of “black dissatisfaction and white guilt” so succinctly and in such a small space.
The free digital download will be available for one week beginning Tuesday, June 16 through June 23, and can be obtained through participating digital platforms such as ReadDC.com, ComiXology, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, iBooks, and the DC Universe digital streaming platform.
