Following the initial success of the newest addition to the DC Universe streaming service and the CW, Stargirl, starring Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, the show has been picked up for a second season, which will be exclusive to the CW Network according to Deadline.
Currently halfway through its first season, DC’s Stargirl has been airing new episodes on the CW a day after their debut on DC Universe. The series was commissioned by the DC Universe digital subscription service with an exclusive linear window acquired by The CW last fall. Along with the exclusive linear window, The CW also secured the right to play the show on the network’s non-linear platforms following its debut on DC Universe.
So far in the freshman season, DC’S Stargirl has followed high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Bassinger), who lovingly inspired by creator Geoff Johns’ late sister who was killed in a 1996 plane crash, as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. Not only does the new drama reimagine Stargirl, but it also introduces the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America.
Though Bassinger plays the title role, the series is rounded out by stars Luke Wilson, Amy Smart, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, Jake Austin Walker, Hunter Sansone, Meg DeLacy, Neil Jackson and Christopher James Baker. Johns executive produces with Melissa Carter, who serves as co-showrunner, as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Greg Beeman. DC’s Stargirl is produced by Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
While the news of a second season is exciting news, it does open up questions about the future plans for the DC Universe Streaming Service, as the original slate of programming has been dwindling with the only exclusive original series, Titans remaining, following the move of Doom Patrol now shared with the new HBO Max streaming service. These moves seem to be shifting the focus of the DC Universe service towards DC comic books and news content for fans.
