NEWS WATCH: Friendships, Finish Lines, But Not Forlorn At The Video Game Hall Of Fame

Super Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat, and Microsoft Solitaire are this year’s inductees

The Strong museum in Rochester, New York is home to the Video Game Hall of Fame and they are inducting the now classic games of 1992’s Mortal Kombat and Super Mario Kart, 1990’s Microsoft Solitaire and 1976’s text adventure game Colossal Cave Adventure for this year’s batch of games.

Everyone’s not so guilty pleasure Microsoft Solitaire has been keeping people awake at work, thanks to Windows since 1990 and it’s a bit of a wonder why it took so long to make to the Hall of Fame. While Colossal Cave Adventure is not only the first text adventure game but is also the first know work of interactive fiction. First, developed by Will Crowther and then expanded upon by Don Wood, Colossal Cave Adventure was for the PDP-10 mainframe computer and is the granddaddy of all our RPG’s.

Near and dear to my heart are Super Mario Kart and Mortal Kombat. Winning but mostly losing in both these game just has to be one of the many reasons why these games are making it to the Hall of Fame. Additionally, both Super Mario Kart and Mortal Kombat are still going strong today with their new installments Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in 2017 and Mortal Kombat 11 out early this year. Not only are both games crazy addictive but both made bank with Super Mario Kart selling more than 8 million copies, with an overall series that has exceeded 138 million worldwide. Whereas Mortal Kombat shipped more than 3 million copies on consoles with the series selling more than 35 million and unfortunately outlasting its developers, Midway Games.

Anyone can nominate a game to the World Video Game Hall of Fame with final selections will be made on the advice of journalists, scholars, and other individuals familiar with the history of video games and their role in society. Established in 2015 to recognizes distinct electronic games of all kinds—arcade, console, computer, handheld, and mobile—that have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general.
