NEWS WATCH: Godzilla vs. Kong Director Tapped To Direct Upcoming Image/SkyBound Film HARDCORE

Hot off the tails of his film Godzilla vs. Kong, for Warner Bros. and Legendary, Filmmaker Adam Wingard has picked up yet another film directing project in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wingard has signed on to direct Universal’s Hardcore, a film based on a comic from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Marc Silvestri.  Hardcore, from Skybound and Image Comics, was a miniseries first published in 2019 following Agent Drake and the Hardcore Program, who can turn any person into a human drone to get to targets that normal soldiers can’t. Now, Drake, the best soldier Hardcore has to offer, finds himself stranded in a body with only 72 hours to discover who’s hijacked the Program; he’ll have to pull out all the stops against an enemy who could be literally anyone.

Wingard will co-write the screenplay alongside rising scribe Will Simmons, who penned reboots of Sleepy Hollow and Internal Affairs for Paramount based on an outline from Kirkman. Wingard, whose break-out film of 2011 was You’re Next, has since gone on to helm The Guest, Netflix’s Death Note, and 2016’s Blair Witch. Also on Wingard’s docket is Paramount’s Face/Off sequel, an animated Thundercats for Warner Bros., and Legendary is eying him to continue its MonsterVerse following his success of Godzilla vs. Kong.

Hardcore will be produced by  Skybound and Wingard’s Montauk Chair with Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst producing on behalf of Skybound. Wingard will executive produce. Matt Reilly, Universal Pictures’ executive VP production, will oversee for the studio.

No further details about the film were available at this time.
