WarnerMedia streamer orders animated prequel for “Gremlins”
The classic 1984 live-action horror movie Gremlins will soon be revived via an animated prequel from WarnerMedia, who ordered the animated series called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai that will consist of 10 half-hour episodes. Amblin Television and WarnerMedia have been working for quite a while on the project in the background to get the series greenlit. The series will be produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros Animation. Executive producers of the show will include Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin Television, Sam Register (Animaniacs), with Tze Chun (Gotham) and Brendan Hay (Robot Chicken) co-executive producering while Dan Krall (Coraline) will be serving as a supervising producer.
This animated series will be written by TKO studios publisher and Gotham TV series writer Tze Chun. Set in the 1920’s Shanghai the story focus on the shop owner Mr. Wing character from the 1984 movie and its 1990 sequel, it reveals how 10-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
WarnerMedia’s ordering of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai marks another entry in a series of series aimed to give the new streaming platform a strong catalog of entertainment for its upcoming launch. With shows like Dune: The Sisterhood, Station Eleven, Made For Love, Tokyo Vice and Love Life WarnerMedia should have plenty of subscribers from the get.
