NEWS WATCH: ICYMI J.J. Abrams Taps Angela Robinson for HBOMax Madame Xanadu Series

DC Comics supernatural heroine and fortune-telling mystic Madame Xanadu is one step closer to coming to the HBOMax streaming service thanks to J.J. Abrams, who has tapped writer/director/ producer Angela Robinson to the upcoming series.

Robinson, whose credits include writing for True Blood and writing/directing Professor Marston & the Wonder Women and The L Word was reportedly personally recruited by Abrams and his Bad Robot partner/wife Katie McGrath to supervise and write Madame X according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Madame Xanadu,  created by David Michelinie and Michael William Kaluta, first appeared in 1978’s Doorway to Nightmare #1 which was eventually folded into The Unexpected following the DC Implosion.  Her origin is connected to King Arthur of Camelot, as she is immortal. She is known to come to the aid of other magic-user super-heroes and has joined teams such as the Demon Knights, Justice League Dark, the Sentinels of Magic, and the Spirit Squad.

Madame X is just one of the many projects that Abrams and Bad Robot have in various stages of development for HBO Max, such as Justice League Dark, a new Constantine series,  a Zatanna live-action movie, a new animated Batman series with Matt Reeves, and the recently announced Superman with Ta Nahesi Coates.

Bad Robot head of TV Ben Stephenson will exec produce alongside Abrams and Robinson with Bad Robot’s Rachel Rusch Rich co-exec producing the potential series which is expected to be part of that larger franchise that Abrams is developing for HBOMax.
