Even though the second Suicide Squad is still almost a year away, the film will be setting up the story with a Peacemaker action-adventure-comedy series for the HBO Max streaming service.
The new series will reunite James Gunn, the writer-director behind the upcoming movie, will explore the origins of the Peacemaker character played by wrestler turned actor John Cena, also in the forthcoming film. HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order for an eight-episode first season, which will be written by Gunn, who will also be directing several episodes, including the first one.
Peacemaker was one of the superheroes owned by Charlton Comics that were later acquired by DC Comics. Peacemaker was created by writer Joe Gill and artist Pat Boyette, first appearing in Fightin’ 5 #40 (November 1966) as a backup series. The Peacemaker is the alter ego of Christopher Smith, a pacifist diplomat so committed to peace that he was willing to use force an array of special non-lethal weapons to advance the cause.
Peacemaker is just the latest DC character to receive a solo series for the recently launched streamer that seems heavily mining the DC brand. This series joins the already announced Matt Reeves’ spinoff focused on the Gotham City Police Department, the J.J. Abrams Justice League Dark, Doom Patrol, and the highly controversial Snyder Cut of The Justice League film.
Cena’s Peacemaker character has reported proven to be a favorite among the Warners executives due to his scene-stealing ways in early cuts of the movie.
In a statement reported in The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn said about the property, “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.”
The goal is to have Peacemaker go into production in early 2021, prior to Gunn beginning work on rival Marvel Studios’ third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
The Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on Aug. 6, 2021.
