He’s back! The sum ma betch that’s just too stubborn to stay dead, Jackie Estacado, better known as Top Cow’s The Darkness! Superstar creator, and Image Comics co-founder, Marc Silvestri’s returning to one of the premiere characters of his comics company Top Cow!
Silvestri will unleash the Darkness into the new decade in January 2022, but he’s not coming alone. He will be joined by artist Christopher Mitten in this next chapter in Jackie’s life.
Silvestri told Newsarama’s Chris Arrant “Jackie Estacado has always been one of my favorite characters. There is something immensely appealing about a hero that is not only very powerful but – certainly in Jackie’s case – very, very flawed,” Silvestri tells Newsarama. “Characters that have to battle themselves just to do the right thing make for complex and compelling protagonists. I’ve been wanting to write about Jackie and the Darkness power he wields for a long time. That time is now and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
Created in 1996 by Marc Silvestri & Garth Ennis, Jackie and his alter ego made their first appearance in Witchblade #10, and would go on to star in his own self-titled series, that would be published off and on for decades, even starring in two best selling video games!
The Darkness is a force that traces its creation to the beginning of the universe, and represents the void out of which everything springs from. Having the ability to create all forms of hedonistic creatures called “Darklings”, that have an insatiable taste for carnage and destruction. The wielder comes into this dark power on his 21st birthday (the host is usually a male, but has been possessed by a few women in its existence). It has a centuries old feud with its celestial opposite, the Angelus, that would wage until the two eldritch forces would form a fleeting truce, as they consummated to create The Witchblade.
