Marvel announces an upcoming crossover in the pages of Captain Marvel and X-Men featuring the return of the Brood. Both titles will feature connected arcs detailing the titular characters battling the alien race as the monstrous aliens strike across the galaxy. The crossover harkens back to the shared history between Carol Danvers and the X-Men, having dealt with the aliens in the original Brood Saga by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and Paul Smith.
After the respective issues of Captain Marvel and X-Men – which will have one giant connecting cover by Juan Frigeri – the crossover will be concluded in Captain Marvel #49, promising long lasting ramifications across the galaxy. The first issue of the crossover, X-Men #19 will go on sale February 8, 2023, followed by Captain Marvel #46 which releases February 15.
The Captain Marvel arc will be titled Revenge of the Brood, which runs through issues #46-48. It will see Carol and her friends being targeted by the Brood Queen, a plotpoint established in the title’s current arc. The arc will see artists such as Javier Pina and Sergio Davila penciling the title.
“I have been wanting to write the Brood and have some X-Men guest stars since we started this CAPTAIN MARVEL run in 2019!” Thompson told CBR in a recent interview. “The Brood were off the table for a long time due to some changes to their role in the Marvel Universe – and that was true, a little, of the X-Men too. So it’s really exciting to have all of it coming together finally in one story – our biggest Captain Marvel story yet – feels right, y’know? It especially feels right because The Brood are truly [some] of Carol’s greatest nemeses. [Considering] how we’ve been pushing on her powers, her role in the Marvel Universe, and her commitment to being a hero – it feels like things all coming to a head.”
On the X-Men side of the crossover, Gerry Duggan and guest artist Stefano Caselli will tackle the mutant’s response to the Brood Threat in Lord of the Brood. Taking place in issues #19-20 of the title, the X-Men investigate a distress call linked to Broo the Brood King and the rogue factions attacking his subjects.
“The Brood are back, and they’re worse than ever,” Duggan explained. “The X-Men must make some hard choices about their pest control services, and what about Broo, the former student at the X-Mansion, we thought he was the Lord Of The Brood? The problems are galactic and it’s all hands on deck including Captain Marvel, Rogue, Gambit and Polaris. Check for parasites.”
