NEWS WATCH: Marvel Heroes Get Typhoid Fever.

Typhoid Mary is back and causing war in Hell’s Kitchen in time for Halloween, and it will take the might of Spider-Man, the X-Men and Iron Fist to stop her.

With news recently being revealed of Typhoid Mary’s TV debut in Iron Fist in September, played by Alice Eve, Mary Walker is also coming back to Marvel Comics and is setting her sights on Iron Fist, the X-Men and Spider-Man and she will first go up against Spider-Man in the one shot Typhoid Fever: Spider-Man #1 in October. Written by Clay McLeod Chapman, with art by Stefano Landini and cover by R.B. Silva the story finds Spider-Man teaming up with Daredevil, who is trying to take down New York City Mayor Wilson Fisk, Mary’s one time employer. “Typhoid Mary has one of the most dangerous powersets in the Marvel Universe – and writer Clay Mcleod Chapman (Edge of Venomverse) is determined to use those powers in ways we’ve never seen before,” said Marvel editor Devin Lewis. “Pyrokinesis, telekinesis, and mind control… and that’s all in the first scene! Wait’ll you see what else Clay has planned, and what artist Stefano Landini has done with the script for Typhoid Mary: Spider-Man!” Following from this will be two further one shots including the X-Men and finally Iron Fist, all of which will come with interlocking front covers by Silva. As of 17 July the original cover preview for the first issue clearly showed the arm of Colossus to the right of Spider-Man, but as the final three-part connecting covers show, he has been replaced by Bishop.

Although a mutant, her links to the X-Men were always minimal in the past. She had a memorable story with Wolverine in Marvel Comics Presents #109-116 in 1992, which was reprinted in deluxe squarebound format as Wolverine: Typhoid’s Kiss in 1994, as well as a disturbing relationship with Deadpool in Deadpool #6-7 in 1997, where one of her personalities hires him to rescue her and also another to kill her. Following from this were roles in House of M, an alternate earth version of her also seen in Mutant X and she was also more recently involved in the Sisterhood of Mutants storyline in fourth volume of X-Men #9where she had her personalities returned to her by Arkea. Mary even once went by the codename Mutant Zero during the Initiative era, post Civil War.

Created by Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr in 1988, Typhoid Mary first appeared in Daredevil #254, where she was accidentally created by Daredevil pushing her out of a window while chasing down a villain, causing her Typhoid Mary persona to come to the fore and to vow a man would never hurt her again, though her backstory also later included a suggestion of child abuse. Suffering from dissociative identity disorder, Mary has three other distinctly abnormal personalities in addition to her seemingly healthy one. “Mary” is a timid, quiet, pacifist, while “Typhoid” is wildly adventurous, passionate and violent and finally her “Bloody Mary” persona is cruel, sadistic, and hates all men. Aside from some highly developed martial arts skills, her powers are varied and include limited telekinesis, a more impressive level of pyrokinesis and a form of hypnosis, to implant mental suggestions in others, all of which are promised to be showcased in the extreme from the start of her return. With her TV debut, an off the cuff mention in FX show Legion and her war against heroes in Hell’s Kitchen, this could be a very busy year for Mary Walker.
