The Ghost rides at Hulu!
In an announcement that’s set the internet ablaze with curiosity, Marvel Television and Hulu announced the launch of two new live-action series that will debut on Hulu in 2020 – “Marvel’s Ghost Rider” and “Marvel’s Helstrom.”
Executive produced by Ingrid Escaieda, Paul Zbysewski, and Jeph Loeb, “Marvel’s Ghost Rider” will center on Robbie Reyes, an antihero who lives on the Texas/Mexico border and finds himself consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. While he struggles to control the power he wields, he unleashes the Rider to bring vengeance for the innocents he encounters.
Ingrid Escajeda, who will also serve as showrunner for the series, said, “I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as GHOST RIDER. This story hits every note for me—my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people! It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that.”
In the comics, Robbie Reyes is the fifth person to use the Ghost Rider moniker. While the character made his comic book debut in 2014, a version of the character also appeared on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, portrayed by Gabriel Luna. It’s likely that this new version of the character will be set in a different continuity than his earlier live-action incarnation.
“Marvel’s Helstrom” will focus on siblings Daimon and Ana Helstrom, the children of a mysterious, powerful serial killer. The siblings – who have a complicated relationship – track down the worst of humanity, each with their attitude and skills.
Paul Zbyszewski – who is executive producing the show with Jeph Loeb and also serving as showrunner – said “As a lifelong Marvel fan, I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring this darker, thrilling corner of the comic book universe to life, and I’m just grateful to everyone at Marvel Television and Hulu for the opportunity,” said Paul Zbyszewski, Executive Producer and Showrunner. “Marvel’s known for all the heart, humor, and action they put into every series, but this time around we’re adding some scares to that mix. I think we’ve found a compelling way to dissect some of our deepest fears through the experiences of our two lead characters.”
In the comics, Daimon, whose name is spelled Hellstrom, is the Son of Satan, a king of Hell and an occult expert who used his powers to work as a supernatural detective for part of his long, storied career. His sister, Satana, was a succubus who has at various points in her history functioned as either an anti-hero or a straight-up villain. This will be the first live-action adaptation for both characters.
Both series are co-productions with Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios and join the upcoming third season of “Marvel’s Runaways” and recently announced adult animated series based on the popular Marvel Television characters including “Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.,” “Marvel’s Hit Monkey,” “Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show,” and “Marvel’s Howard the Duck,” which will culminate in a special event, “Marvel’s The Offenders.”
