NEWS WATCH: MARVEL’S HELSTROM Comic-Con@Home Virtual Panel

The cast of upcoming Hulu, television program Marvel's Helstrom met for a virtual Comic-Com@Home 2020 panel to discuss the series premiering October 15th on Hulu

The cast of upcoming Hulu, television program Marvel’s Helstrom met for a virtual

The Helstom panel opened with a discussion of the current state of the world, relating how the show is about good vs. evil, and how there is a responsibility to discuss the real-world evils in the world. This wasn’t something I felt I couldn’t do justice summarize for this article. The words of June Carryl, Robert Wisdom, and Ariana should be heard by everyone.

To directly quote June Carryl, “If you want to be good, be good. If you want to do better, then do better.”

Highlights of the panel

After viewing an exclusive trailer, Prudomm directed questions to screen executive producer Paul Zbyusewski. He referred to Helstrom as a nature vs. nurture and family story. Zbyusewski related it back to real-world events, talking about the decisions that are made for people and the decisions people have control over. It’s not a story of superheroes punching people. It is rooted in the moral conflict between characters and within themselves.

Tom Austin and Sydney Lemmon, who play Damon and Ana Helstrom, spoke about the family dynamics of the character. They detailed how their characters are bound by the trauma of their family and history. They have separated from each other and built their own lives, but now they are coming back together

Elizabeth Marvel, who plays Victoria Helstrom, says she drew a lot of her character from anger and frustration of the world and from the work of Anthony Hopkins. While the story is not about addiction, she was able to pull inspiration from the story of children of parents with addiction

Robert Wisdom, who plays The Caretaker, spoke cryptically about his character’s role and how he starts the show. When asked if Wisdom had been able to research the character, Zbyusewki answered that there are differences from the source so doing research would not have been as helpful

Ariana Guerra described her character, Gabriella Rosetti, as logical, which does not mesh well at first with Helstrom’s super-powered view of the world. Through their show, she learns more empathy as she learns more of the character

June Carryl, who plays Dr. Louise Hastings, stated that she inherited a maternal bond with Damon. Though unprepared, she comes to care about him. It’s through this that Dr. Hastings comes to learn who she really is.

Alain Uy, who plays Chris Yen, spoke about his character’s relationship with Ana. He explained how he spoke to his sister, who works with foster children to learn about the importance of trust in foster kids creating relationships. This bond is part of their paths of healing from their trauma and find a way to thrive.

Teases:

Paul Zbyusewski – The show is laced with Easter eggs for those who know the comic.

June Carryl- Said the acting is incredible, and Zbyusewski explained that actors went through a lot.

Tom Austin- Most excited to see the second half. The actors only knew the plot of the episode they were about to shoot, and everything flipped around the fifth episode.

Alain Uy ended the panel by dropping spoilers that were censored out while his costars watch in shock and amusement.
