NEWS WATCH: Onyx Makes First Contact With Image

Image announces a new one-shot, Onyx, from writer Chris Ryall, artist Gabriel Rodriguez, and colorist Jay Fotos. The story is set for a September release and is being co-published by Image Comics and Syzygy.

In the announcement, the creative team took a moment to talk about their inspirations for the book. “I’ve made no secret of my lasting love in comics—armored cyborg warriors and working with the amazingly talented and fantastic human Gabriel Rodriguez are atop that list,” said Ryall.

Onyx follows the titular character, a cyborg warrior that comes to a near-future Nigeria ravaged by overpopulation, along with a parasitic, corruptive alien species. The summary for the book makes it clear there might be more to Onyx, and that she could be a savior of the Earth or its executioner.

The ambiguity is part of what Rodriguez discusses to be a core tenet of the writing. In the announcement, Rodriguez said “Mainly because our heroine came to life in a much deeper, more vivid and intriguing way than we expected. We didn’t just want to join her on this ride, we wanted to explore her psyche and her soul through a non-stop adventure set in a world as rich, thrilling, and fun as we thought she deserved. Hopefully, our readers will discover in her a character to root for here and want to see more of in future books, too.”

Onyx will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, September 28, along with being available across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.
