NEWS WATCH: RESIDENT EVIL Series Coming to Netflix Streaming Service

A series based on and inspired by Resident Evil, Capcom’s hugely popular survival horror game/movie franchise is coming to the small screen.  The series will be stream through the Netflix service, which has given an eight-episode first season for the series.

Resident Evil first debuted in 1996 and as become one of the genre-defining survival horror titles and best-selling video game franchises of all time.  Over the course of almost 25 years, the series has expanded beyond games into six film adaptations, grossing$1.2 billion worldwide.

The Resident Evil film franchise, launched with the 2002 Resident Evil, consists of six movies to date, produced by Constantin.

The series, written by Supernatural executive producer/co-showrunner Andrew Dabb and produced by Constantin Film, will follow a brand new story across two timelines, one in the past before all hell breaks loose and another set in the future.

The timeline in the past will follow fourteen-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker, who move to New Raccoon City, A manufactured, corporate town. This move forced on them right as their adolescence is in full swing. As the two spend more time in New Raccoon City, they come to realize that the town is more than it seems, and their father may be concealing dark secrets. Secrets that could destroy the world.

The second timeline moves to well over a decade into a dystopian future, where there are less than fifteen million people left on Earth and more than six billion monsters — people and animals infected with the T-virus. Jade, now thirty, must struggle to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past dealing with her sister, her father, and herself continue to haunt her.

Andrew Dabb was only recently selected for the project, which has been in development at Netflix since early 2019. Dabb in an interview with the entertainment site, DEADLINE, said,

“Resident Evil is my favorite game of all time. I’m incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first-ever Resident Evil series to Netflix members around the world.”

Dabbalso teased that characters from the franchise will appear on the show, along with new monsters.

“For every type of Resident Evil fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before.”

Dabb executive produces the series with Robert Kulzer and Oliver Berben of Constantin Film and Mary Leah Sutton. Constantin Film CEO Martin Moszkowicz serves as producer.

Bronwen Hughes (The Walking Dead, The Journey Is The Destination) will direct and executive produce the first two episodes.

German production and distribution company Constantin Film is the studio.

No expected release date for the series, which promises to incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and “easter eggs,” was given.
