NEWS WATCH: Stan Sakai Developing ‘Usagi Yojimbo’ Animated Series

The long-running comic series Usagi Yojimbo is currently being adapted for an animated series spearheaded by creator Stan Sakai with Gaumont Television.

On a recent social media post, Stan Sakai revealed the news standing next to a teaser image during a meeting with Gaumont in July. Though there has been no other information released currently, this project appears to be part of a resurgence for the franchise. IDW recently released a new full-color comic series (a first for the series!) in June, to mostly positive reviews. An animated series could help bring the franchise to a more mainstream audience.

For those who are unfamiliar, Usagi Yojimbo is set in Edo period Japan and features almost exclusively anthropomorphic animals. The titular hero, Miyamoto Usagi is a rabbit samurai who fights his way across a land ravaged by civil war. The series started in 1984, first appearing in Albedo Anthropomorphics #2 . Look for the latest release from the new IDW series on shelves when Usagi Yojimbo #3 releases on August 7th, 2019.
