NEWS WATCH: Taika Waititi To Take On A Classic In “Flash Gordon”

“Flash Gordon” is set to make a comeback as an animated film

Looks like Fox/Disney is willing to bet that the iconic 1930 science-fiction comic strip Flash Gordon is primed and ready for a return which thanks to Deadline news who said Taika Waititi is going to take a “crack” at it.

Most people might remember Flash Gordon form its 1980 cult classic movie, which would be a hard film to top so Fox/Disney is going for an animated feature. It is expected but not confirmed that Waititi would write and direct the film with John Davis producing. Flash Gordon has previously been in development for quite a while with Kickass’s Matthew Vaughn and Overlord director Julius Avery set to make the cult classics return a reality but little to nothing has come from that pairing since its announcement. Now comes the new idea to take the animated film route in hopes of rekindling interest in the project. Instead of having to compete with the fond memories of the beloved movie by Sam Jones and Max Von Sydow who’s following goes back decades in no small part thanks to the soundtrack and theme song by Queen and their amazing front-man Freddie Mercury.

Flash Gordon was first published in 1934 to compete with the then adventure comic Buck Rogers. In the Flash Gordon comic strip, Earth is about to be destroyed by a collision with the planet Mongo, and Flash is sent off in his rocket ship in an attempt to stop the catastrophe. Once on Mongo Flash has to fight the tyrannical ruler Ming the Merciless. The comic strip led to a serial starring Buster Crabbe and multiple movies, television, and animated series with the latest incarnation being a 2007-2008 TV series on the Syfy channel.
