NYCC 2019 is over, the halls of the Javits center are empty of con attendees, exhibitors, and artists who have gone home to enjoy their con swag, deal with con crud, count their money and for some, prepare for the next one…
Artists alley sat right in the middle of NYCC 2019, at its heart you could say. For this X-Men Monday we wanted to pay tribute to “The Best of X” a collection of X-Men art that was either pre-commissioned or done at the convention that we have scoured from various corners of social media… so here they are in first name (of the artist) alphabetical order
It’s worth noting that there are more than a few Domino pieces in this article and the reason is not just because I am a huge fan. Two of the biggest collectors of Domino art were at NYCC this year and even got together at the con, so there is a very good chance that every Domino piece you see here is either for one Jason Wood or Todd Moniz!
More often than not the commission art we see is of popular characters like Wolverine or Storm. Every now and then though a discerning collector will commission a much rarer character and this Lifeguard is a great example of that.
Marvel’s current run on the merry mutants by Jonathan Hickman has yielded some fantastic new characters including this one Rasputin who is a fan favorite (she is definitely my favorite new character from the series) from House Of X and Powers Of X.
It’s always interesting to note the deep and abiding influence of an artist’s X-Men runs on the franchise has on fans and how it affects the art they request as seen here.
Artist Matteo Lolli will be the artist drawing Dawn Of X title MARAUDERS and above we can see a commission of his version of Captain Kate Pryde (fans really want to know what happened to that nose. Be sure to pick it up to find out!)
Can’t deny the popularity of Emma Frost as seen above with three different artists takes on her!
Artist Rod Reis who will be drawing Dawn of X title NEW MUTANTS gets in on the X character action too
Todd Nauck is a huge self-confessed X-Men fan and people love his takes on the merry mutants. Todd gets the deep cut award of this article for that Kitty Pryde and X-Babies Wolvie and Storm in her outfit from Excalibur: Mojo Mayhem!
Not a traditional commission, this last piece is a 4ft Psylocke Tony Moy painted for the St Judes Children’s Hospital charity auction.
That’s it for this year from NYCC. Till next time. Happy X-Men Monday!
